New York – GPS Finds Cheapest Gas Prices

New York – New GPS gadgets can help you save directly at the pump. For an additional $14.95 a year, TomTom owners can download info from the company Web site that directs them to gas stations with the cheapest prices.

“A user can find the fuel by distance, route or price,” said Joanne Aliber, director of product management at TomTom.
Competitor Garmin also offers the service on its higherend models. “It’s a very popular feature,” said Garmin spokeswoman Jessica Myers.
Verizon Wireless also offers GPS technology and similar info on gas prices on some of its phones for $9.99 a month.

The service works by accessing a database that tracks gas prices based on credit card transactions.

TomTom’s service can save a typical driver $60 a year or more, given that per-gallon prices often vary by a quarter or more. But some professional drivers in the city said saving pennies is more trouble than it is worth. “It makes no sense to shop around,” said cab driver Mohammad Mohammadaly, 58, of Long Island City, Queens. “It’s not worth it driving east or west for 5 cents or more. You just wind up waiting and there are long lines. It’s not worth it,” he decided.

Or you could stop driving. But that would make too much sense.

My friend has been pairing up the TomTom gas prices service up with their real-time traffic info on the same gps as in the story (GO 930). They actually work pretty well together to save gas $$, since the traffic info helps you avoid sitting in a jam just wasting gas.
