APPLEINSIDER.com (http://bit.ly/1mjgzTv) reports that the unit, called a “smartAC kit,” usually retails for around $120.
Plugging the smartAC into a wall outlet nearby a window unit AC-unit allows it to access the cloud, which can then be accessed by users through a companion IOS app.
ConEd customers are allowed to apply for up to five free units, but there is a caveat, which states that anyone receiving the free smartAC kits must also commit to participating in ConEd’s demand response program that allows ConEd to automatically raise the target temperature on connected units during peak hours when demands on the grid are highest.
coolNYC’s website (http://bit.ly/TauzTP) says, however, that users will be notified at least 24 hrs. in advance of any temperature increases aimed at easing the grid, and that there is an opt-out clause for users during each individual event.
This is my third summer using the modlet devices. I enjoy turning on my ACs from my phone before I get home, so it’s nice and cool.
The best feature for me is the scheduling that I use for shabbos. You can set 3 on/off events.
This is excellent for when I return from the mountains after a long hot weekend

There is no way I would want ConEd to control my temperature settings!!

There’s a worse caveat – Why ask for a credit card? We take your credit card information to secure your coolNYC order. Your card will be validated with a $1 authorization charge, which will be refunded. Don’t worry! We will NEVER charge your card for the equipment if you set up all your smartAC kits by July 31 or simply return the devices free of charge. Otherwise, you may be charged up to the full retail price of the equipment.
