Newark, NJ – Newark Liberty Airport has become the latest to debut electronic passport kiosks for international passengers, a technology said to trim lines at Customs by up to 45 percent.

The kiosks were officially unveiled at the airport Wednesday. There are 20 in Newark Liberty’s Terminal C, with 10 more scheduled to be installed.
Arriving travelers scan their passports at the kiosks, have a self-photo taken and answer questions on whether they’re declaring any goods. The process takes about two minutes. A law enforcement check is done electronically through the kiosk.
Previously, those steps were taken with a Customs agent at the desk. Agents will still screen travelers after they leave the kiosk.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the kiosks are in use at about 20 airports, with several more planned.
