New York – Ferocious thunderstorms are thrashing the New York City area, swamping some highways, backing up airline traffic and knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses.

Departing flights are running more than three hours late Saturday evening at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports. Departures are more than two hours behind at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The downpours briefly cut off service on part of the subway system’s L line, but transit officials say it is running again, with delays. Parts of the Bronx River Parkway, Long Island Expressway and some other arteries are closed because of flooding.
Consolidated Edison says more than 3,300 homes and businesses are without electricity across New York City and Westchester County. The Long Island Power Authority is reporting scattered outages.
