The coalition includes groups like the AARP, Common Cause, the Working Families Party, several unions and dozens of elected leaders from around the state. It has filed a petition with the Public Service Commission seeking a “complete and public” review of the state’s telecommunication system.
In a statement announcing its petition, the coalition says landline telephone service has deteriorated and rates have gone up, while many upstate and rural communities are still without broadband service.
The coalition hopes a state review of the telecommunications system would indicate whether telephone service rates are fair and whether sufficient competition exists.
I miss my old landline service. I switched to FIOS and the sound quality is abominable, half the time I make people repeat what they say and the half is taken over by a buzzing sound.
Verizon is allowing its copper line service to deteriorate in order to push everyone into its Fios service. Apparently they are allowing it to deteriorate in even in areas where there is no Fios service as of yet. They are also pricing their Fios at a much lower price than the old copper line prices.
I went to Fios and find it as good if not better than the old copper lines.
Today, in most areas there is a choice. You can usually switch to the phone service supplied by your local cable service.
If you live in an area where you can’t get cable or Fios, then you will may have trouble. Legally Verizon is required to fix your service within 24 hours in case of trouble or face fines. If they say they can’t do it that quickly get stubborn and insist or threaten to go to the appropriate NY State agency.
