Washington, DC – New Laws for Americans With Disabilities Coming Soon

Washington, DC – The Bush administration is about to propose far-reaching new rules that would give people with disabilities greater access to tens of thousands of courtrooms, swimming pools, golf courses, stadiums, theaters, hotels and retail stores.

The proposal would substantially update and rewrite federal standards for enforcement of the Americans With Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights law passed with strong bipartisan support in 1990.

The new rules would set more stringent requirements to more than seven million businesses and all state and local government agencies.

The proposal includes some exemptions for parts of existing buildings, but any new construction or renovations would have to comply.

The new standards would affect everything from the location of light switches to the height of retail service counters, to the use of monkeys as “service animals” for people with disabilities, which would be forbidden.

The White House approved the proposal after a five-month review. It is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, with 60 days for public comment. After considering those comments, the government would issue final rules with the force of law.

Already, the proposal is stirring concern. The United States Chamber of Commerce says it would be onerous and costly, while advocates for disabled Americans say it does not go far enough.

allot of people don’t realize what far reaching effect that law has, just to give one example; those indented sidewalks on every corner in b.p. contrary to popular belief, that’s not there so that the ladies could use the baby carriages, that’s there because of the disabled.

and do you realize that blocking the ramp may cause a disabled person using assisted device, like a walker or wheelchair, to be late to work, wedding, home…………

Noch dos felt unz ois. I still haven’t forgiven Bob Dole for the first ADA. This can go into Bush’s domestic Democrat-lite legacy together with his Medicare “Part D”, his education policy, and his immigration policy.

As a wheelchair user I applaud this and disagree with what posters 7:25 and Milhouse say. This is the only way I can go shopping,to shul during the week and to doctors appointments. The curb cutout are NOT new parking spots or a place to stand and schmooze. The ramps at steps at entrances are there for people like me. And shiurim and minyanim taking place downstairs or upstairs with no access is very unfair.

It is morally wrong to require other people to incur expenses just so that your life becomes easier. People have the right to say your business is just not worth going after, the small profit they’ll make on you is not worth the expense of catering to your special needs. If your disabilities make life hard for you, complain to the Ribono Shel Olam; it doesn’t give you a right to make everyone else jump through hoops for you. The sad fact is that there are some places you just can’t go without assistance; if you ask nicely people will be happy to help you, but if you made legal demands, as the ADA does, then you should expect them to resent it and you.

Milhouse, are you a Repulican who supports the war?

If so how do you justify your ghoulish atitude towards all our soldiers who return from Iraq without a leg? Without both their legs? or an arm?

What the hell is wrong with you?

I sleep just fine. How do you anonymous cowards sleep, when you are stealing millions of dollars from people, forcing them to spend on things that they don’t want and don’t need, just to cater to customers from whom they will never make a profit? If someone thinks it’s worthwhile to make changes in order to cater to disabled customers, he will do so without any law; the law’s only purpose is to COMPEL people to make these changes even when they are NOT worthwhile. That is unconscionable, and whoever supports such laws should not sleep at night, because it’s outright robbery.

If you have a disability, that is *your* problem, not mine. If you want me to go out of my way to accommodate you, *persuade* me, make me *want* to. Coming after me with a law, and threatening me with fines or jail if I don’t comply is not going to win my heart or mind, and without that you are stam a highway robber, and you can go to Hell, wheelchair and all.

Milhouse, youxpressed disdain for something you seem to call “democrat lite”… are you a Repulican who supports the war? If so how do you justify your disgusting atitude towards all our soldiers who return from Iraq without a leg? Without both their legs? or an arm?

    People that served us? you?

Laws are for all people. Just because more are one way doesnt make other less relevant. What if ch’v there was a disabeled person born to your family? or someone lost a limb? or went blind?

Is this what “authentic” and “torah judaism” teaches you? is this what you teach your children?
