New York City – Mayor Michael Bloomberg hit a sour note by saying he’s not big on the idea of private school vouchers, at an education conference hosted by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

New York parents have been given more choice among public and charter schools, Bloomberg said, but he said nothing about vouchers until asked during the question-and-answer period following his comments.
Bloomberg replied that he didn’t seek vouchers because it would be politically impossible to get approval from his state’s legislature and such a fight would distract from other efforts to improve the city’s schools.
“I’ve never been a big believer in vouchers,” Bloomberg added. He said that’s because “what invariably will happen with vouchers is those who are sending their kids to private schools already will take up most of the vouchers.”
He said government’s major job is to provide quality public schools because that’s where most children will go with or without vouchers.
I am sure he is not a fan as he has loads of cash.He wouldnt have a idea how much it would help the community
That’s not the issue – he’s a liberal socially and therefore doesn’t like the idea.
And where did Bloomie send his daughters to school? Just asking!
And there goes Bloomy again. He’s a shmuck in the highest degree according to Jackie Mason.
this is more proof he is a self hating jew what ever is good for jews he is not a fan
Oh Bloomy, go to BErmuda and stay for a couple of years. Stop haunting New Yorkers. Yeah just for Mayor then retiring to a philantropic life. Sure. Maybe a little detour to Presidental aspirations, Governor elections, etc.
its good that he did not approve it because the school will screw up the price of tuiton off averybody
Bloomberg daughters both went to posh private school Spence. Tuition 20,000 dollars a year per child. Bloomberg reportedly would donate $5 million a year to Spence from his Michael R. Bloomberg Family Trust Foundation.
Then eldest daughter Emma went on to Princeton and Harvard business school.
It would require amending the New York State Constitution to permit vouchers to be used for religious schools. An attempt had been made to do this in the 1960s but it was voted down, as has every other voucher proposal ever submitted to voters in the US. The public support just isn’t there.
As Charlie said, also if the state were to fund private schools it would cost a lot of money, which would require a tax hike to pay for it, that would be real popular right about now.

YOU THE MAN;IT WILL BE LIKE SEC. 8 FOR RENT
Everyone speaks from emotion think from logic and business logic there is no way to put that plan thru with out it affecting a different grant the government has FREE MONEY COMES FROM SOMEWHERE
Maybe yeshivos should start being considerate when i went to a well known one the principal had his house rebuilt in a way no rAbbi or principal can afford unless he is getting paid top dollar or has a sucessful business on the side if he does why does he take pay at all
sooooo true. if vouchers get approved then all the same lazy people who choose not to work and live off medicaid, food stampls, section aid will be the only ones benefitting. they will be ‘eligible’ for vouchers, which will increase tuition prices and hurt US the most – those honest, hard working citizens who work ‘on the books’ and pay taxes as all americans are supposed to do
BLOOMBERG IS RIGHT!!!!
It’s true that Mayor Bloomberg’s kids went to private school. The thing is, he didn’t ask anyone to pay for it.
school vouchers are a state issue anyways
how are we going to pay the heiliga melamdim

The issue goes well beyond whether Bloomy did or did not ask anyone to pay his daughters’s private school tuition. Hizzoner is talking about how great the public school system is, but it apparently is not good enough for his own kids. And if it is not good enough for his kids, then why should it be acceptable to anyone else?
It isn’t the funding, its Bloomy’s unabashed hypocrisy!
I think he is right but I woould like to see tax credit on my tax return for the education I pay. I think Councilman Felder had a bill in the Council and it was voted down cause of the Teachers Union
Maybe the rich people in our community should donate MORE to yeshivos in the community instead of building lavish homes and making lavish weddings!!!!
