Ashraf Ali posted abusive letters to synagogues, many of which contained anti-Western comments and threats against Jews. One of his letters to the London-based Jewish Chronicle contained a white powder which was later found to be harmless.
Ali also targeted the Southampton Hebrew Congregation in Mordaunt Road, Southampton. Police said Ali’s actions had caused distress among the Jewish community.
A judge described the hate mail as ‘threatening and grossly offensive’, but spared him a jail sentence.
Instead Ali, 31, was given a nine-month prison sentence – suspended for two years – at Portsmouth Crown Court.
During sentencing Ali, who is married and has a child, took the witness box to apologize and explain his actions. He told the court he had become disillusioned because he couldn’t get a job after
leaving the University of Portsmouth, where he studied Biomedical Sciences.
His barrister Stephen Smyth described Ali’s actions as ‘incredibly stupid’ and he said his client was genuinely remorseful for what he had done.
Sure he was remorseful . . .
