A trooper escaped serious injury Sunday evening when a routine traffic stop turned dangerous.

As heavy downpour soaked the area around 8 p.m., Trooper Gregory Brack was patrolling the northbound lanes of Interstate 87 and spotted a dark-colored sedan speeding near Exit 32.

The 32-year-old trooper pulled behind the car and turned on his Chevy Tahoe’s emergency lights to get the driver to pull over.

Schroon Lake-based State Police said that when the lights were activated, the driver of the car “slammed on the brakes,” causing the trooper to do the same to avoid a rear-end collision.

But the sudden braking sent the officer’s SUV hydroplaning across the wet road and crashing into several guardrails.

As the SUV overturned, police said, the driver of the sedan kept going and fled the area.

State Police said Brack was wearing a seat belt at the time and “was really lucky” to escape the wreck with only a few cuts and scrapes.

Brack, who was working out of the High Peaks barracks, was taken to Elizabethtown Community Hospital for treatment and later returned to duty.

Officials said the Tahoe was “demolished” in the accident and was taken to the Troop B headquarters in Ray Brook as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police are continuing to search for the driver of the sedan and said it was “appalling” that the other driver didn’t stop after the accident.

Anyone with information about the accident, which temporarily blocked traffic on the Northway, is asked to call 518 873-2750

Interesting to note, Trooper Brack was profiled by VIN News last week for an award he received helping a Jewish couple in 2007

Besides cellphone antenas, they should put up surveillance speed cameras.

He got repaid quickly but He should not have returned to work. Whiplash, which can be severe and last a while, can show up up to 120 hours after the incident.

The refuah (healing) before the makeh (the problem). Now they have electric to attach to the cellphone antenas, to put up the surveillance equiptment.

i’m curious if that guy did it intentionally. not that i would think of doing it, but for someone who would wana take a risk it’s not a bad idea.

TO Dreidel   4:11 and various other morons who may think that risking another person’s life to avoid a speeding ticket is “not a bad idea” –

If you were a fair representation of the mindset in our community I would take my family and go live in a cave.

to say this driver did it intentionally is ridiculous. many drivers panic when they see flashing lights & the first thing they do is slam on the brakes. the next thing a panicking person does is flee…

With all these negative comments. Its NO WONDER when facing a trial I WOULD NOT my PEERS to be part of the jury process. I would “put my faith” in the Judge to find me innocent.

Why is it that every time we see a police cruiser pulled to the side with another motorist every other driver slows down?

If your not speeding why put other people at risk?

Anyone driving up to the mountains this year, we ask you to PLEASE STOP BEING A YENTA AND DRIVE LIKE A MENSH. THANK YOU.
