Lev Levayev, head of the world congress of Bukhara Jews, spoke today after holding talks with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon. He says a final decision on financing will come in September.

A new site has been selected in Dushanbe, the capital, for the synagogue but local Jews say they cannot afford the construction costs.

Bukhara Jews have lived in Central Asia for more than 2,000 years. More than 12,000 Jews lived in Dushanbe alone before the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, but Tajikstan now has less than 1,000 Jews.

Instead of building a new shul, why not give the last 1000 Jews an Aliya, give them a home in Israel & build them a new shul & a new Bukhara museum there.

Have you noticed what happened to each “eda” of yahadus hamizrach in EY? Lewt the yidden of dushanbe keep their identity and integrity. Making aliya is sometimes aliyah tzorech yerida.
