New York – As The Economy Turned Sour, Anti-Semitism Increasingly Prevalent

    19

New York – While the subprime mortgage crisis roils the market, a profusion of anti-Semitic rhetoric has exploded against companies like Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers Holdings on online message boards maintained by Yahoo.

The Jews at Goldman are responsible for high oil prices,” one user on a Yahoo message board for Goldman Sachs wrote recently. “Yeah, not one word from the media about how the greedy Jews have brought this whole financial mess on the world. Wonder why that is?” said another poster on a message board for Lehman Brothers Holdings.

These comments and others like them have drawn the attention of the Anti-Defamation League and public relations officers from firms named on the message boards, who are approaching Yahoo about cleaning up the sites.

“We don’t have any affiliation with the site,” a spokeswoman at Goldman Sachs, Andrea Raphael, said, adding that the firm has contacted Yahoo and asked that it remove the offensive comments from the boards.

The Anti-Defamation League is also jumping into the fray, and has contacted Yahoo to look into the matter. “We are hopeful that when we get in touch with them, they will address the problem,” the associate director of civil rights, Steven Freeman, said.

On the site, banks that are attacked also include Washington Mutual, with comments like, “No wonder the Germans hate Jews so much. Just for making a dime, they are willing to destroy and ruin the country which gives them shelter,” according to someone called sunfy8.

A commenter calling himself hochithul said on a site for Goldman Sachs, “Jew banks will get destroyed by shorts,” referring to short sellers. “Jews stick together like mud and love to pat themselves on the back,” prudentman007 wrote on the same site. Lehman Brothers is also under attack, with someone named dontputsaltonmypepper noting, “Them Jews are sneaky bastards.”

Yahoo “takes abusive language on its message boards very seriously,” the company said in a statement. The terms of service for using its message board disallows any comments that are “defamatory, vulgar, obscene” or “hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable,” but it also has a liability clause that releases Yahoo from any responsibility for these third-party comments.

The vitriolic comments were first unearthed by the Web log Self-Evident after searching for terms “Jew” or “Jews” on message boards for financial companies.

The commentators don’t limit their comments to the defamation of Jews, also employing epithets for homosexuals and African Americans, although less frequently.

Yahoo’s message boards, which link to individual company pages that track company performance, news items, and stock prices, seem particularly susceptible to this kind of conduct. A search of similar pages supported by Google returned almost no examples of anti-Semitic statements.

There are two ways in which message board posts are monitored: there are filters that weed out offensive language, and there is a customer care team that employs “swift and immediate action in response to user reports of abuse,” according to Yahoo. The company claims that a response to a complaint usually takes place within 24 hours, with the customer care team either deleting the post or revoking an offender’s user account.

It can be hard to determine the liability of companies when they are used as a platform for vitriol, a senior fellow in regulatory policies at the Heritage Foundation, James Gattuso, said. If an anonymous commenter disseminates troubling content, Yahoo is not responsible, but if Yahoo hosts a discussion group that it is monitoring and there is hateful content, it could be held liable. “Things like these are not as new as we think. If someone says something defamatory on NBC, is the television channel responsible?” he said.

According to the Communication Decency Act of 1996, “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Since users are considered information content providers, Yahoo is not liable for defamatory statements made by them, a spokesperson for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Rebecca Jeschke, said.

“The principle is that you hold the speaker liable, and not the soapbox.”

    lets all realize one thing

as long as the “goy” can pay his rent or mortgage and take his family to disneyland once or twice a year -the jew is pretty much left alone

as soon as this evaporates the “goy” lets out his fustration on the jew who he sees as controlling the banks etc and who he percieves as having more than him

we are in a very scary situation parnassa wise but in the bigger picture the atmosphere is ripe for rampant antisemitism

there is only one answer and that is we must be mispallel to the one that has preserved us as a nation up to this day

I believe that our time in USA is up. What with Obama as president, and with the economy being what it is, the atmosphere is ripe for 1933 dejavu, haShem yishmereinu. Time to pack, brother. And, we were hoping that this was our last stop before moshiach.

The ADL should look into the RAMAPO press blog where there is open virulant antisemitism – the newspaper has not responded to my complaint to remove the offensive messages.

Joseph says it well. Historically, pogroms and the like were perpetuated by poor frustrated villagers who would looked for someone to blame for their misfortune. It is a natural tendency for a person to feel the need to blame someone – anyone – for their troubles.

Indeed we will need extra Rachmei Shamayim, especially if Obama will win the presidency, as the status of the blacks will now be elevated in par with the whites. Negative attention will now be diverted to other minorities, namely Jews.

Those with longer memories can remember when Yahoo ran comment postings on every news story. Every story eventually had anti Jew postings. It did eventually concern Yahoo as they took down the entire section.

Please note; Anti-Semitism includes hatred of Arabs, it is not the same as Anti Jew.

what else is new. As long as food is cheep and they can fill their belly, they dont bother the Jew. As soon as prices go up, Blame the Jew. It does not matter that the Jew is suffering the same. it does not matter that the average Jew does not have money. It does not matter that jews are losing their jobs. it does not matter that jews dont set the price of Oil , Food etc. Blame the Jew anyway. Wake Up.

I have said for many years, that given the right conditions the same exact thing took place in 1993 could in fact happen in these United States. It might not be today or tomorrow, but please do not be wear rose colored glasses. It will happen. The anti-semitism while cloaked here in the USA can be just as virulent as it was in Germany. It only takes a good wind turn a smoldering fire into a bonfire. Astrong Eretz Yisrael is the best insurance for a Yid in Gulas.

“also employing epithets for homosexuals and African Americans”

Many comments in this and other frum blogs are full of vitriol directed towards homosexuals and African Americans. Perhaps we are being paid back measure for measure?

When ignorant people on this forum make hateful comments against the “goyim” (because they obviously do not understand that G-d is the Creator and Father of ALL peoples whom He made in His image, not just the Jews) how different is that from anti-Semitic morons ranting about the Jews?

as far as blacks are concerned this blog never uses any derogotory term for blacks

if we as jews have our problems with obama its for what he is or rather what he isnt

and nothing to do with the color of the skin

your comment is out of line, ignorant and plain stupid

    To anonymous 5:59,

Charlie Hall is correct, look for the posting, from yesterday, regarding HIV tests in the Bronx.

There are plenty disparaging remarks about other minorities on this and other blogs.

Charlie Hall, no, we do NOT write comments against non-jews, we are NOT discriminating against blacks, all human beings are the creation of hashem, and we respect ALL!

Anon 9:22, nobody would write anything about arabs in general, when an arab will kill masses of jews by blowing himself up, or will an arab leader call for destruction of the jewish people, thats when some people might and should condemn it to the fullest extend.

There is no hate just because the economy is soaring and the jewish people (like all other people) are struggling with managing to survive, no jew will write “the Arabs are at fault for the economical hardships”, or “the Christians are at fault”. while the Yahoo blogs etc are full of of blunt hate and non justified finger pointing.

anonymous 12:58 says: ~ When ignorant people on this forum make hateful comments against the “goyim” ..

    1) no one ever made any negative comments just plain at goyim.

    2) “goyim” is a general language including any non jew, so it’s just non sense to write something “against’ ALL people of the world.

    3) when writing agailnst jews, or a certain race or religion, then it’s considered discrimination and racism, and this is what this article is all about.
