Governor David Paterson stepped in shortly before midnight and got the utility and the union representing 9,000 workers to agree to a 72-hour “cooling off period.”
A gubernatorial spokesman says talks will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m.
A spokesman for the union, Local 1-2, says a new strike deadline has been set for 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night.
The union says the two sides were still far apart at midnight, and remain at odds over issues including wages, health care costs and pensions.
Con Ed officials says they are hopeful a deal can be reached when talks resume, but has a contingency plan in place.
