Authorities say the over 60-mile stretch of Thruway from outside Rochester to Buffalo, along with Interstate 190, re-opened to essential travel at 1 p.m. Friday after being closed since midnight. But the nearly 70-mile stretch between downtown Buffalo and the Pennsylvania border remains closed.
Several inches of lake-effect snow off Lake Erie and high winds caused hazardous driving conditions overnight and through Friday morning. The snow stopped in the metro Buffalo area early, but some areas to the south could see a total of 2 to 3 feet of snow through Saturday.
Thoroughfares in those areas, including Route 219 and Route 400, remain closed.
