Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said today that the victim, a jewelry dealer, discovered about 925 items missing after his flight arrived in Los Angeles.

Brown says one of the baggage handlers kept some of the stolen jewelry at home on top of his microwave, and other stashed rings and earrings under his bathroom sink.

The defendants are charged with second-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Port Authority Police Superintendent Samuel J. Plumeri Jr. vows that all airport thieves will be “fully prosecuted, without exception.”

Stupid travellers- next time why don’t they just stuff cash inside their luggage and expect it to arrive safe and sound at the next destination. This was as dum, or dummer as that.

Send it UPS or FedEx and properly insure it! (But then, you’ll have to declare it and pay the customs duties on it. Silly me!)

Why arent there video cameras recording every square inch of space devoted to baggage handling? That will do more to deter theives than anything else. Cameras are cheap these days. Shamoe on the MTA or whoever is governing baggage handling for not making cameras ubiquitous throughout the airport including bathrooms, baggage handling, and seating areas. This is post 9/11!!

I was once sitting in Terminal 4 waiting for my delayed flight to Europe. I found myself speaking with this young African American Woman. She explained that there was a lot of theft in the baggage handling area and this Airline, an Asian firm, hired her to guard and stop baggage thefts. Her job began when the empty plane was brought to the gate and that every night she caught and stopped pilfering. She said she had no fear of checking luggage but would only put cheap underclothing in.
