Borough Park, NY – Pull The Lever for Simcha Felder. Interview With VIN News

Brooklyn, NY – When addressing the hotly contested race for the 21st State Senate District in Flatbush, incumbent Kevin Parker tells both the press and longtime supporters that he is a victim of “term limits.”

Yes, opponents Simcha Felder and Kendall Stewart are both City Councilmembers who are facing the prospect of unemployment at the end of 2009, but Parker is a victim of something more dire than term limits: he suffers from lethargy.

While the three-term incumbent has spent the last two years rising in the ranks of the State Senate (he’s the newly appointed Democratic Minority Whip) as well as being one of the early supporters of presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign – both noble causes, mind you – he has left his constituents fending for themselves in a dicey economic time, leaving the door open for two Albany hopefuls who claim to have done more for the community on a city level than Parker has from upstate.

It’s this lassitude that, we believe, is the reason he is always facing a bare-knuckled primary challenge every time he’s up for re-election while his Albany colleagues skate through the electoral process – even as all of their colleagues in the City Council face term limits as well.

Four years ago, Parker won a similar three-way primary challenge with 45 percent of the vote.

We predict that this year will be far worse for him.

Each of his challengers is tied to a different part the 21st District, which includes Flatbush, Kensington, Midwood, Ditmas Park and Borough Park.

Stewart, who has been constantly under a microscope ever since his staff members were charged with taking part in a slush fund scandal, was born in St. Vincent and represents the district’s Caribbean community while Felder represents the Jewish Orthodoxy.

Yet of the three, Felder is the one we believe will represent all of the communities in the 21st District with compassion, vigor and a splash of humor.

During his time in the City Council, Felder has proven to have both an open mind as well as a willingness to work with anyone, even when their personal and political philosophies conflict.

Even though he disagrees with some of his politics, Felder has also built a strong alliance with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has backed him in his State Senate run.

This, of course, has backfired somewhat, with many Democrats claiming that Felder would side with the Republicans in the Senate if elected.

We disagree and believe that Felder will be an independent thinker and straddle the political divide in the senate, voting for the bills he believes would benefit his entire district.

That is why VIN News gives our endorsement to Felder as well as hold him to the challenge we’ve just laid out for him.

VIN News compiled questions what our readers have sent us in the past few weeks to ask Simcha, below is the interview.

VIN News: Rumors are that you took sides in the Satmar fight and you were responsible for funding UJCARE. Also, why did you visit the Satmar Camp belonging only to one side?

Simcha: I do not take one side or the other side. In all my years in the City Council, I have directly helped fund UJO and was proud to have done so. This year, I was deeply concerned that their funding would be cut as was the funding of many important community groups and did everything humanly possible to protect them. This was the first year I advocated for UJCARE and was proud of that as well, but in no way was UJCARE funded at the expense of funding to UJO or anyone else. In the future, I will continue to advocate for all worthy community organizations just as I did this year. With regard to my camp visits, I visited every camp that invited me. If other camps would have invited me, I would have loved to visit them as well.

VIN News: Some people in the community say that it was not appropriate that you brought the council speaker Christine Quinn to Beis Yaakov School of Borough Park, because Ms. Quinn is openly not practicing family values.
Simcha: The school begged me to bring her cause they needed help with certain programs. it was not my idea.

VIN News: Why did you support the Dahill Road housing development?

Simcha: There has been a lot of lashon hora and false information spread around the community to try to get people to think this is a bad thing, but the truth is, this is an extraordinary housing development. 179 new condominiums will be built; the majority of them are 3-, 4-, and 5- bedrooms. Each has a Pesach kitchen, a Sukkoh porch, with a mikvah in the building and indoor parking for every owner. And despite the rumors of commercial space and it being a 13-story building, the development will not include commercial space and the building is only 7 floors with a setback. This won’t be the Empire State Building or a huge shopping complex or any of the things opponents of the development have falsely claimed. I made a commitment when I was elected to build more housing in this community, which is why I worked so hard to secure housing development at the Culver El line. In this case, I’m proud to have taken an abandoned, rodent-infested, crime-ridden wasteland and am turning it into a great housing development. I can understand neighbors not wanting anything built in their backyard, but this badly needed housing is about the entire community, and that is why I supported it.

VIN News: Why did you support congestion pricing?

Simcha: It is my job to weigh all of the factors and make difficult decisions. Sometimes we need to anticipate a lot of different factors. It became clear to me that congestion pricing was going to pass the Council by an overwhelming majority with or without my vote and get sent to Albany where it would have been defeated. I could have registered a no vote and it probably would have made me a lot more popular to do so. At the end of the day, I need to be effective every other day of the year as well. In no way would I have ever jeopardized the crucial support to chesed organizations just to register a symbolic vote on a complicated issue. In fact, the plan did pass with a large margin in the Council, and would have passed with or without my vote, and ultimately did die in the Assembly. B”h, this vote did not hurt anyone in the community and allowed me to continue to get important resources for the community. Making difficult decisions is about doing the right thing for the community, not doing what will make me popular for one day.

VIN News: What did you accomplish in the past 7 years in the City Council for the Community?

Simcha: While I was in the City Council, I have consistently brought home the resources that this district needs and deserves, including a hundred million dollars to build new playgrounds, renovate playgrounds, and support the neighborhood charities like Yeled V’yalda and Shomrim, we depend on. I secured a previously unused city property for a brand new garage and headquarters for the Boro Park Hatzolah. My office has been open and I’ve been available to help countless people in the community with their problems in the neighborhood, while seeking legislative solutions to recurring issues, such as limiting the number of hours that Sanitation agents can issue tickets to homeowners and leading the fight to issue fines to advertisers that throw unwanted fliers on people’s property. These are the accomplishments people should come to expect from their elected officials.

VIN News: If you win the State Senate seat, do you have an agenda that you plan to take on to help the Community, and what issues?

Simcha: I would focus on non-public education funding, something that I have been fighting for in the City Council, but due to restrictions in place by State Law, I haven’t been able to accomplish everything I wanted. It takes State Law to bring about the changes we need. We’ve heard about movements to bring us support like education tax credits. This is essential support that Yeshiva parents deserve, considering how much of their tax money goes to public education. But that’s just the beginning. State law currently mandates that the city fund items and services like textbooks, nurses, school lunch and transportation. This is important funding that has helped generations of children in New York City, but this law needs to be brought into the 21st century to include funding for new needs in technology—such as laptops—and security in nonpublic schools. We also need state laws to improve some of the services that the city already provides, like transportation. Right now, the city pays for bussing for children in nonpublic schools all over the city, but many Yeshiva students don’t benefit from this service, because the city doesn’t provide door to door pickup and refuses to extend the hours to accommodate Yeshiva students who spend longer days studying. The result is that parents end up paying for something that they’re already paying for with their tax dollars. This isn’t fair. We need the state law changed to mandate school districts provide either buses and/or transportation vouchers for students that need door to door pickup and in schools with longer hours. These are the issues that I think about while I run this campaign, and the possibilities are very exciting.

VIN News: How did Mayor Bloomberg get to like you, and how did you get to be so close to Mayor Bloomberg?

Simcha: Maybe it’s because I always bring him good rugelach? Seriously, I was an early supporter of him, when he wasn’t as popular as he is today, because I saw the good he could do for New York City. Also, perhaps because we are both independent thinkers who do what’s right instead of what’s easy. You’ll have to ask him the answer to that question, but I just did what I thought was right, and the Mayor respected me for that.

VIN News: How can you assure that you are the best candidate for the community not playing the fact that you’re Jewish? People like to vote on accomplishments.

Simcha: I happen to be Jewish, and I am very proud of it, but that shouldn’t be the reason to vote for me. When you buy food, clothes, or cars, or when you hire a plumber or electrician, you compare the options and see which one is the best. Right now you are not getting your money’s worth with your current State Senator. I bet a lot of people don’t even know who the current State Senator is. I beg everyone to look at my record: a hundred million dollars for parks, playgrounds and community organizations, important legislation cutting down the number of sanitation violations issued, fighting advertisers that throw fliers on your property, passing legislation to suspend of alternate side parking on Purim, keeping garbage trucks off our streets during the busiest times of the day. These are some of my accomplishments, and this is the record you should use to make your choice.

Simcha: I would like to thank VIN News for giving me the opportunity to discuss these issues with your readers. I urge everyone to go out and vote Tuesday September 9. I would like to wish all VIN News readers a Ksivah V’Chasimah Tova

I would like to know what difficult independent desicion Simcha made. He was against the cross harbor tunnel, for congestion pricing, increased property taxes, increased water taxes. It seems to me every desicion he made was wrong. Let us make the right desicion and send Simcha back home. Eight years of Simcha have left us unhappy enough.

The Felder interview reveals his lies and inaccuracies.

    1) The Dahill Project was opposed by the community because the re-zoning would allow a twelve story structure and assurances by the Brach Wydra Group to the contrary are not credible. Felder empty pronouncements of supporting affordable housing ring hollow, as Felder opposed the inclusion of affordable units in the development.

    2) Felder’s accomplishments included making housing increasingly affordable by voting for real estate and water tax increases.

    3) Felser’s TRUE agenda will become public only if he gets elected, AND THEN IT WILL BE TOO LATE.

    4) Bloomberg loves Felder because he is the Mayor’s patsy. Felder does EVERYTHING the mayor orders him to do.

    5) The fact that Felder is Jewish should not be a factor, as the voting public should decide on the candidate they believe will serve our community with integrity.

I’m with Kremzel … Simcha Felder needs to find another line of work. He is not supportive of the community … it is all empty words.

He even wants to make it illegal to feed pigeons!

Not only is this anti-animal, it is anti-human!

Some people (especially the elderly)have no other joy in life, but to feed pigeons.

Shame on Felder. He’s a disgrace.

I hope Simcha Felder DOES NOT win. He needs to grow up. So far he did NOTHING possitive for our community. When he worked for Dov Hikind he was a gopher. Now he’s a gopher for Bloomberg as well. He’s like a small child who doesn’t belong in politics. Voting for Felder is a huge mistake!

Don’t leave out the rest of the answer. You are worse then a lib. Use your brains, cause his vote didn’t matter and he wanted to continue bringing in funding he voted for it.

To all the Dahill Rd rumer spreders:

This is a 7 Story buliding with a setback. 179 units not all the hype of 227 300 or so on. Simple 179. Never knew that a 3, 4, and 5 bedroom unit is called small. 7th floor units are duplex with the setback floor as a 2 floor apt. Felder did the best thing by supporting this development. He thought about the community not just about a few people. WE NEED MORE HOUSING IN THIS COMMUNITY!!! As a board memebr of CB12 I must say that all of you sold us lies about this development ans Felder did what was good for the community.

    Where did Simcha say AFFORDABLE?

    Anonymous 11:02am

Simcha does not own the Torah Times. In your way of thinking, Does Kevin Parker own the Weekly Link?

    Regarding Bloomberg:

Felder voted on a lot of bills not the way Bloomberg wanted, he even proposed a bill that passed, Changing the times the Sanititation is allowed to issue tickets for home owners (This was discussed on the blog already – Check the Daily News) and Bloomberg was against it but had to sign cause he knew that Felder won’t back off.

Bloomberg does not have Felder in his pocket.

Read this comment that was posted on a different post on VIN:

    AuthenticSatmar Says:

Yes there are sgnificantly more traffic lights in Boro Park, the streets ARE cleaner, he assist his constituents in navigating gov’t issues, and there are 15% more cops on the beat. Our community organizations have benefited from his communtiy handouts. Hatzolah received a lot for a new building, chaveirim received money for equipment, and others received as well.

He was at the forefront of fighting the Sanitation dept, and he led the drive to revamp ECB. He scrapped the old Section 8 rolls, allowing many eligible families finally start benefiting.

When there were riots in BP, it was Felder that forced the investigation into the police’s handling thereof. It was Felder that had the 18th ave park remodeled as well as the McDonald park – where he had the drug dealers removed. It was Felder that had the sanitation schedule changed to benefit our community, and arranged for pre pesach accomodations.

He led the drive vs. the health dept’s proposed tampering of Bris Milah, and their attempt to put heavy rules on our yeshivos.

As for vouchers, Simcha has said from day one that it is a state not a city issue, and he is therefore powerless to do anything about it.

Felder has an almost perfect attendance record in the city council. He takes his job seriously.

He has succesfully built relationships with other politicians and has used those for the community’s benefit.

The issue where he angered many is his vote for congestion pricing. In private he revealed his reason for doing so was since he knew it wasn’t going to pass anyway, he wanted to win favor with Bloomberg. Our community has benefited to the tune of millions of dollars, because of that intelligent political maneuvering.

SO IF YOU ASK HAS FELDER DELIVERED, THE ANSWER IS AN OVERWHELMING YES!!

Felder has had a great staff handling problems, especially his Chief of Staff, who I think is named Fern. Parker has probably had the worst staff of any local elected official. Parker’s representatives have freuently shown up at community meetings after they have ended. The ability to select and retain good staff is an indication of whether the elected official is a mentch.

I must note that it is a sad thing that it is ever necessary to intervene on behalf of a frum Yid who was arrested. These things just shouldn’t happen.

I’m voting for Felder who while I don’t agree with him on every issue is clearly the best of the 3 candidates.

Felder empty pronouncements of supporting affordable housing ring hollow, as Felder opposed the inclusion of affordable units in the development.

These are some of the most famous lies that the oppositionist to Dahill spread !!

Here are some of the facts that I was told, speaking with someone that was personally involved with the builders and City Planning while this was proposed and re-proposed.

Originally the plans were for 12 story buildings with small apartments and lots of commercial space. When the community approached Felder for help, he immediately contacted the Wydras and specifically expressed his opposition to the entire project. The Wydras were very willing to sit down with the “block people” to listen to their reservations and worries, the result was a complete new plan which was totally designed to serve “our community” needs. The buildings came down to 7 stories (with the 6th and 7th being duplexes, so that the highest walking in shobbes is only 6 floors), large apartements (with pasech kitchens), and commercial exposure was limited to the minimum of one commercial bank!!!

These plans are the ones that were passed by city planning and got the endorsement of Felder. The “block guys” intentionally feed the Boro Park public with intensive lies, all because of some selfish people who “don’t need more Jews in their backyard” they were very specific with their remarks at the City planning commity “we like new housing, but not in our back yards”. I can understand the reasons for people (who live in Boro Park but portend they live in Boca Raton) to oppose more congestion on their block, but we all live in the City of NY and this is what the entire 5 Boros are going trough, every nieberhood and street has seen this happening in recent years.

Felder also requested that Wydra locks in the plan with a Boro Park “hiemisha” non for profit org. and legally empower them to shut off construction in the event anything goes out of the current approved planning.

The issue of affordable units (within the developments) was opposed by the “block guys” and not by Felder!!! They spread panic rumors that affordable housing will bring in unwanted guests to the neighborhood. Felder in response obligated the developers to commit a significant amount of money that will be escrowed with the above “hiemisha” non for profit, with the ultimate goal to give it back to the public in a form of helping potential buyers with down payments.

Felder supported the needed construction of this development & assured to accommodate the “block guys” to its maximum, however up to the point of their self-conscious complaint of “not in my backyard”.

As being involved the past 30+ years in the community I must say that Councilman Simcha Felder went out of his way to help yechidim.

I must say one thing: Every office in the City you walk in and you mentioned Felder 99% knew who he is. Felder has an open door in every agancy in the City.

What gets me sick about all these politicians if the promise of HOUSING. Not one jewish organization or jewish leader has brought any housing to our communities.

According to NYC data there are currently 20,000 orthodox jews that are in desperate need for AFORDABLE housing. We keep on hearing these promises of “if you elect me i will get affordable housing…”

All politicians are thugs and liars. Bloomberg has not done anything for orthodox jews that need housing. Section 8 is the biggest fraud. Most people on section 8 are stealing from people that really need it and would get it without the cheating and lying.

Felder did nothing for the housing cause.

Michael Nelson has done nothing for affordable housing. The aguda has done nothing for affordable housing and this is why Bloomberg made sure the Aguda loses it’s 11 million dollars this year.

Don’t know what you are talking about. Thanx to Councilman Felder an abandoned, rodent-infested, crime-ridden wasteland on Dahill RD and 50th Street will turn into a 7 story 179 unit apartments. The appartments will be 3, 4, 5 bedrooms and will have a Pesach Kitchen, Porch for a Succah, Parking spot in the garage.

Felder also got Bloomberg to give away City Property on the Culver EL line for Housing.

Yes most politicians promise and don’t deliver but all due respect Felder did deliver. It will just take some time before the houses are build.

I’ll be very honest with you, come Sept. 9th I will go into the voting booth holding my nose and vote for Felder since he’s still the better of the bunch but not because he deserves it. I truly hope that his staff will let him know of the dissatisfaction of so many constituents and that he takes it to heart.

WE need more parking spaces not only more housing. People can’t find parking so they make illegal driveways and another parking space is taken away. Every year another 2-3 yeshivos open up and their buses take away another 6-9 parking spaces.

I would rather go with Dov’s pick. Dov will still be in Albany and better for him to work with someone he endorsed than have the district be subject to infighting.

Fievish Says: There is one problim with the Wydras

thay have done the same thing in Williamsbusrg thy built a big building in the yiddish naighberhood with a promise that it will be for yiddin and then thay (Mr. Roth livivnf now on 52 strret because thay made him leave williamsburg)changed the plans and sold the whole building for goyim. Now big chuchem Simcha has no guranty from them that thay wont do the same here.

But within one of “Anonymous’s” posts he criticized Simcha of hiding (being anonymous). Mr. Anonymous, please come out from the closet and officially introduce yourself, let all see that you are one of the “block guys” who simply doesn’t want more of us in “your back yard”. People are not stupid enough to believe all accusations you pure on Simcha only because he had the guts to stand up to say “yes we do need more housing”.

You “block guys” are so ridicules! Reading the posts from beginning to the end Simcha is first accused for supporting housing, and then denounced for not doing anything on housing, can you clear your mystification?

I am not interested in representing Wydra, further, I refuse to get myself into the grimy politics in Williamsburgh (UJO /UJCare) but what Wydra built in Williamsburgh was at that time fully supported by the community leaders. Wydra will do what the community (leaders) will ask him to do, and Simcha was the one who encouraged the negotiations and got this upcoming wonderful project to life.

Mr. Anonymous, please come out from the closet and officially introduce yourself: Well why dont you first introduce to the public!

but what Wydra built in Williamsburgh was at that time fully supported by the community leaders! Yes that is what he is saying they first got suppert from the community leaders and then went and changed the plans and sold it for not yiddin agenst the suppert from the community leaders.

Simcha was the one who encouraged the negotiations and got this upcoming wonderful project to life!

The problem is that he did the negotiations all by himself and has no guranty that Wydra will not do the same thay did in williamsburg.
