Yonkers, NY - Police arrested two Yonkers men and a 17-year-old city boy in a stolen 2002 Honda Suburban that was swiped from the parking lot of Stein Yeshiva Lincoln Park School after someone stole the keys out of a teacher’s handbag.

Omar Edwards, 20, of 88 Shoreview Drive, Charleton Lucas, 19, and William Lucas, 17, both of 98 Crisfield St., were arrested after a brief foot chase by members of the Street Crime Unit.

The teacher reported that she had left the bag in the classroom on a window sill for about an hour and 15 minutes. When she returned, the window screen had been ripped back, her bag rifled through and her keys stolen. The teacher went out into the 287 Central Park Ave. school’s parking lot at about and found her car missing.

Members of the Street Crime Unit stopped the stolen car with the three suspects inside at Plymouth and Central Park avenues. All three bolted from the car but were arrested after a brief foot chase.

Edwards is charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
Charleton Lucas is charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools, a misdemeanor. He had a window puncher used to break car windows.
William Lucas was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and false personation, a misdemeanor. He gave a false name during the arrest.

I understand a plea deal is already in the works, whereby the accused will be pleading guilty to some minor traffic infractions.

I hope "murray" is merely being ironic and sarcastic and that such a mere wrist-slap is not the case. These miscreants deserve whatever harsh punishment the system metes out to them.

Nonetheless, that having been said, this incident hopefully will act as a wake-up call to the victim -- and to all other potential victims as well -- not to be so careless as to leave a handbag or any other valuable item unattended on a windowsill or anywhere else where some creep can easily grab it. What if, chas v'sholom, the cops had not grabbed up these guys -- and they went to her house (they had her keys and could get her address from her wallet) to wait for her and commit who knows what other kind of crimes, possibly up to and including murder?

She should definitely bentsch gomel on Shabbos.
