New York City – NY Times: Political Insiders Keep An Eye On Silver, Squadron Elections

    14

New York City – Perhaps no primary in the state is being observed more intently by political professionals than that of Sheldon Silver, speaker of the state Assembly and one of the most powerful men in Albany. This year, Mr. Silver has drawn not just one but two young challengers: Paul Newell, a community organizer, and Luke Henry, a lawyer.

Neither is likely to defeat the speaker, but the race has become a test of whether Mr. Silver will be hurt by his role in stymieing some major initiatives, like Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s proposal to charge drivers for entering Manhattan’s busiest areas.

A narrow win for Mr. Silver could embolden future challengers not only in his Lower Manhattan district, but also to his leadership in Albany.

Mr. Silver, for his part, is taking no chances, blanketing the district in recent days with volunteers and fliers, including a letter from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Reached by phone, Mr. Newell kept his game face on. “Obviously, his name recognition is near a hundred percent,” Mr. Newell said. “But to the extent that I’ve gotten, ‘Oh, the new guy against Sheldon Silver,’ I think we are getting better known.”

Overlapping with Mr. Silver’s home base is the district of Senator Martin Connor, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Mr. Connor is a former Senate minority leader and a 30-year incumbent, but this time it is possible to think of Mr. Connor as the underdog.

His challenger, Daniel L. Squadron, is a protégé of United States Senator Charles E. Schumer, who has endorsed him and rallied his formidable campaign machinery and fund-raising network to help him. That has helped significantly, not least in finances, where the challenger has significantly exceeded the incumbent. In addition, Mr. Squadron was endorsed by Mr. Bloomberg, whose support and influence may be felt in several other primary races in the five boroughs, too.

The race also has a contest within Brooklyn’s bitterly divided Satmar Hasidic sect. One group of the Satmar, headed by Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, is supporting Mr. Squadron. (Mr. Teitelbaum’s group is based in Orange County, but many of his followers live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.) The other group, based in Brooklyn and headed by the Mr. Teitelbaum’s brother, Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum, is supporting Mr. Connor, despite a reported plea from aides to Mr. Bloomberg that he support Mr. Squadron.

So much for honesty.Silver’s opponent lies about endorsement and feels no need to inform the voters.

Why do I get the feeling that the supporters of the “Stadium to Nowhere” are behind this guy Newell. We in the Frum community must support the re-election of Shelly Silver. If you live in the district Vote if you know someone who lives there give them a call and remind them to get to the polls and put Silver back in office. Please

Silver opponent admits false endorsement claim

    By Josh Rogers

Paul Newell, who is challenging Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, admitted to falsely claiming editorial endorsements from Downtown Express and The Villager.

The claim was made in an email to supporters on Sunday, two days before the primary. Newell apologized to the publisher of both papers, John W. Sutter, immediately after Sutter contacted the campaign about the inaccuracy.

In an interview with this reporter immediately after he issued the apology, Newell said he would not inform his supporters of the inaccuracy.

“I don’t think I can do this at this point in the campaign,” he said.

I’ll vote for Motty Connor, as a sign of appreciation for all the good deeds he has done for us in the past 30 years.

Pogroms started against yidden because of less than this blood libel from the Post and there are those in kiryas joel who cheer all the anti-Silver press. meanwhile silver was always helping kiryas joel. hopefully, he has learned that kiryas joel are animals.

Who’s working at the Post? Joseph Goebbel? This is disgusting. Silver must be re-elected. I am heart broken that a cover like this would be published in 2008 have they forgotten the past?

Unfortunately, Mr Silver is in the pockets of the teachers union and negligence lawyers ( he’s an employee of one and blocks any law that could help clients ).

yoichy, don’t think for a second that Squadron is better than Connor. If you were happy for 30 years, and you want a change, vote for Squadron and you will be UNHAPPY for as long as he is in office.

I hope my forecast is not true….
