Petah Tikva, Israel – An Israeli city is using DNA analysis of dog droppings to reward and punish pet owners.

Under a six-month trial program just launched, the city of Petah Tikva, a suburb of Tel Aviv, is asking dog owners to take their animal to a municipal veterinarian, who then swabs its mouth and collects DNA.
The city will use the DNA database it is building to match feces to a registered dog and identify its owner.
Owners who scoop up their dogs’ droppings and place them in specially marked bins on Petah Tikva’s streets will be eligible for rewards of pet food coupons and dog toys.
But droppings found underfoot in the street and matched through the DNA database to a registered pet could earn its owner a municipal fine.
“My goal is to get the residents involved, and tell them that together, we can make our environment clean,” said Tika Bar-On, the city’s chief veterinarian who came up with the idea for the DNA experiment.
Bar-On said the DNA database could also help veterinarians research genetic diseases in dogs, investigate canine pedigree and identify stray animals, replacing the need for electronic chip identification.
So far, Bar-On said, residents have “reacted positively to the program and are cooperating because they want their neighborhood to be clean”.
Petah Tikva will consider making it mandatory for pet owners to provide DNA samples from their dogs if the trial program is successful.

As a dog owner, I think it is a great idea and not afraid that when a dog owner gets caught it will cause shame to the dog owners community, on the contrary it shows that most dog owners do follow the law and want every dog owner to follow the law, and punish the bad dog owners. it helps all dog owner in the long run by weeding out the less responsible ones, who give us a bad name, and cause discomfort for the walking public. after a few gets tickets, punished there will be much less poop on the street. Great news.

formerly frum, you know I see you alot on this computer with all your comments, most proberbly you are a loser, no job, and busy surfing the net, you own a dog, I mean we are all really jealous of you, we all wish we would be in your shoes, after all you were once frum, and you became very bright and smart and you are now FORMERLY FRUM.
My question is, whats the point of using a nick name formerly frum? what are you trying to accomplish? who are you trying to do in, I mean does anybody care if you are frum or not, I mean I am trying to figure out whats your point?
I work online, so it only take me a second or two to post a comment. Not sure what a dog has to do with a being loser.
You missed my point
Without attacking you, like you attacked me I will explain. When people give opinion on any matter, it really helps for the others who read (my) opinion to know a little bit of the person background. Since, every persons background or situation will influence their opinion and views and how they experience things.
For example, in this case is is telling that a dog owner or owners approve of this measure that can cost them money, since no one is perfect. It shows that as a group, of people we realize that some in the group are not that responsible. Also, we realize self regulation does not and will not work. (we do tell other dog owners to pick up) And we are not afraid that since some of the bad guys will get outed and fined it will reflect poorly on the rest of us. It shows just the opposite, that most dog owners are responsible and want the few or many bad ones to become responsible or pay the price.
Something the frum community does not understand, either by hiding the molester issue, or when they cannot except that some frum people are crooks and or unethical.
Need I explain more or do you understand.
BTW next Peasch when you thank hashem for taking you out of Egypt, you should also thank dogs, like rashi says, since the dogs did not bark when the yidden were leaving . A little thanks is in order to dogs.

Seriously—what if there are 2 identical twin dogs, owned by 2 different families—one family is responsible, the other lets their dog do its business anywhere? The DNA would be identical.

interesting, but they do not have a test for it yet. As a matter of fact there are a few cases where the police cannot arrest someone even thought they have the dna, because the criminal is an identical twin.

These puppies are usually not identical to each other; each puppy starts as a separate egg and develops with its own placenta. In fact, puppies within a litter can even have different fathers, so they can look very different from each other.
because of the above identical twin are extremely rare.
So i guess it really is not an issue, and if by some bazaar case it happens, I guess you would need eye witnesses. If not your are off the hook.
