Merion, PA – The disappearance of a Merion man with a mental illness has prompted an area-wide search by members of his synagogue community.

David Shapiro, 42, who has schizophrenia, was last seen yesterday near 19th and Lombard Streets in Center City by someone who had recognized his face from flyers posted by members of Chabad of The Main Line.

Shapiro has been missing since Thursday when he left his home for an appointment at Bryn Mawr Hospital that he failed to keep. Shapiro is 5′ 9″, 160 pounds, and his beard was recently cut. We’re told he doesn’t dress formally, he was last seen wearing shorts, a trench coat and he was barefoot and he often wears a yarmulke.

A police report has been filed with Lower Merion Police. Police say he needs medicine for a mental illness.
“Foul play isn’t suspected,” said Rabbi Shraga Sherman, of the Merion synagogue. “He’s not a threat to society. He will not make good judgements for himself, so we fear for his own safety.”

Anyone who sees Shapiro can call 911. Anyone who would like to volunteer with the search can email [email protected]
