Ogdensburg, NY – City Suing Owner of Ahava Kosher Cheese Plant to Get Equipment

Ogdensburg, NY – The city has filed suit against the owner of the kosher cheese plant to acquire its cheese-making equipment.

The lawsuit was brought after St. Lawrence Food Corp. recently defaulted on loans issued by the city totaling about $500,000. The company used the cheese-making equipment as collateral on the loans.

An agreement called for the city “to take possession of the collateral at its discretion,” should St. Lawrence Food Corp. default on its loans. But company officials met with the city and still refused to give them the equipment.

“This is just another defense because we want the equipment to stay with the plant,” City Manager Arthur J. Sciorra said.

The city acquired the Main Street building and property in late July for delinquent property taxes. St. Lawrence Food didn’t pay the 2006 tax bill on the property, totaling $89,000, city officials said.

The city acquired the 30 Main St. building and property to protect its investment out of concern that Signature Bank might take the equipment and close the plant.

The New York City bank filed suit in December against Ahava Food Corp., Yoni Realty LLC and Schwartz & Sons Inc., Brooklyn; Lewis County Dairy Corp., Lowville; St. Lawrence Food Corp., Ogdensburg, and Moise Banayan and Ana Banayan, Monsey, for being in default on several loans. The case is pending.

    An open letter to all,

I run an organization and I am a receipient of the generosity of Ahava Food Corp, and its employees. My organization is not the only one receiving aid. There are numerous other heimish organization near and dear to all of us. I ask you to patronise this wonderful company, especially at this crucial time.

In addition to the person commenting about how long its products last. I want you to take this to mind. The company prides itself for not having unhealthy preservatives, and other unhealthy chemicals, in to their milk. I think your relatives will thank you for it. Buy less milk each time you shop, but get it more often.

    Thanks.

    A grateful receipient

    1) Why is someone preparing for yom hadin by spread false rumors?

    2) if the stuff were no good, giving all the tzedokah would not make a difference. The consumer would still be ripped off.

    3) IF you bought a product that was spoiled your store might just as easily be to blame. They should refund your money because Ahava gives full credit to the stores for all spoiled product (unless it is passed the freshness date.)

What Chutzpa – if they can’t pay the bills what right do they have to give tzedaka.

In effect they are giving the tzedaka off of their liabilities – meaning the banks and the municipality are giving the tzedaka.

Anyone know if the municipality is seeking new management to take over – and how to get in touch with them??

a (says) 11:37AM. If Signature Bank (of NY) stands to take a hit [on the defaulted loan/s], let them stand in line with the rest of the Financial Institutions that are going to bailed out by the Federal Government!

I buy new square milk/ahava cheeses all the time and it isn’t spoiled. If when you buy it its spoiled you should consider switching grocery stores. Maybe your store doesn’t refrigerate it immediately when it gets delivered or maybe their refrigerators aren’t cold enough.

I agree with Charlie Brown, I find that New Square milk is usually one of the most reliable for freshness. It is probably due to insufficient refrigeration where you buy or on the way. I sometimes see bagel stores storing milk unrefrigerated all day as they use it for coffee. ALways insist milk you buy is ice cold.

Saying that Ahava has no chemicals and that’s why it spoils is implying that the other brands do have chemicals. That’s also Loshon Hora b’Rabim. If you don’t like the product, switch brands.

after a while i figured out which store keeps the milk refrigerated properly and havent had a problem since

I buy new square milk and I think the taste and freshness is pretty good. As mentioned previously, a lot depends on where you buy the milk. It’s not uncommon to come to some stores and see crates of milk either sitting outside on a hot day, or next to the fridge waiting to be put on the shelves.

I’ve bought many products that should last for months that are already spoiled. I just bought tomato sauce that when I got home I saw the top popping up. I planned on returning it, but within a few days it popped up so much that I just threw it out. The reason I’m bringing this story up is to show how it’s not just the company to blame, but a large part of the blame goes to the store.

I know many folow Chalav Yisrael. If I’m not mistaken that’s an explicit ruling in the Shulchan HaOrech. It was to protect us from consuming milk from non-kosher animals.

Although non-Chalav Yisrael is permitted in America because we do not allow milk from non-Kosher animals to be sold here. Many hold this way veven though it’s preferrable to drink/eat Chalav Yisroel products.

Personally I have been screwed many times by Chalav Yisrael products spoiling prematurely. Perhaps it’s the fault of the stores. But I have never been screwed by organic non-Chalav Yisrael milk and cheese products, which carry reliable hashgacha.

So while I like to support Yidden, I am not going to if it is inferior.
