Town Police said Marc Eber, 53, was riding with other members of “Hillel’s Angels,” a fraternal Jewish motorcycle club from New Jersey. They were on a day ride from New Jersey to New Paltz.

Police said for unknown reasons, Eber’s bike crossed lanes and struck a guide rail on the opposite side of the road early Sunday afternoon. It is unknown if a cardiac or other medical event may have led to the accident, police said. No other contributing factors are apparent currently, police said. The investigation is continuing pending the results of an autopsy.

Two medical doctors who had been riding along with their own motorcycles provided CPR on Eber. Arriving officers provided the doctors with an Automated External Defibrillator and assisted with first aid until Mobile Life ambulance arrived. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he was pronounced dead.

    U/D:
Misaskim assisted in releasing the body with out an autopsy, and is now on the way back to Lakewood.

    U/D 9-22-08 9:00 AM
David Levine VP Hillel’s Angels spoke this morning with VIN News and had this to say “Marc was head of our Tzedeka committee”. “This past May he spearheaded a fundraising effort for the Hillel’s Angles and the JMA (Jewish Motorcycle Alliance).” “The Ride 2 Remember raised over $50k for the Heartland Holocaust Fund.” We will miss our friend terribly”.

B”DH… such a horrible tradegy… I’m waiting for some of the gedolei hador to denounce this as a goyish activity or some other far right nonsense. Sorry for bringing that up, but it happens on here a lot.

Anyway, may his neshama rest in peace. It sounds like he was a great man.

I’m sure someone is working on stopping the autopsy. I just hope they asked a qualified posek first if they SHOULD stop the autopsy.

Sorry RobRoy, while he lived in Lakewood (indeed, he was part of an old Lakewood family from years ago) he wasn’t all that frum, I’m sorry to report. So he wouldn’t have given a hoot what the “gedolim” would assur this time. And I doubt they would care all that much about autopsies either.

Because the knee-jerk reaction to stop all autopsies is not always correct. There are times that it is not only mutar but mechuyav.

This should be a wake up call to those modern chassidim who like to copy activities of the secular world like going gambling, riding motorcycles, etc.

I am sure that theses bikers had a certain level of Jewish pride and maybe its us frum Jews who should of invited them for a Shabbos but we must also learn a lesson. The first rule in Judaism, orthodox Judaism is safety. A frum Jew should not drive a motorcycle just as a frum Jew should not smoke. One out five motorclist get killed. Any Jew who is frum and smokes or drives a motorcycle is a Shoyta a fool. Even if he is the biggest Rabbi in the world with todays warnings from the surgeon general is a fool and if he smokes in public he is a murderer and one who misleads young Jews into evil behavior and will suffer for that sin in this world and the next. Special thanks to Misaskim for their noble work on stopping autopsies.

    Dear Heshy:

“Any Jew who is frum who … drives a motorcycle is a Shoyta a fool.” Using that logic, any Jew who uses any form of modern transport i.e., cars, buses, airplanes (they have terrible accidents and people are killed or maimed) is a fool. And any Jew who uses any medication (side effects,oy!) or subjects themselves to any medical intervention (the complications!!) is a fool. In fact any Jew who walks around in public places (imagine the germs, bacteria, viruses!!) is likewise a fool. Well thanks for your concern and excellent advice. By the way “one out of five motorcyclists get killed” – there is no such statistic. Signed – 15 years on a Harley and frum!

    Joseph
    Joseph

I’m not saying he was a terrible person, just that he wasn’t a frum person to A) care what “gedolim” say about motorcycles, and B) to care about autopsies. Was he on his way? I don’t know. I knew him like 10 years ago, and he wasn’t on his way then. If he started to come around, great. I wasn’t aware.

Just because someone gets killed in an accident, it doesn’t make him an instant martyr. Sorry to break it to you.

Heshy – The trauma surgeon reported that there were no significant injuries as a result of the crash. The motorcycle did not kill my friend Marc, who was an experienced, trained, and skilled rider. All evidence points to a massive heart attack leading up to the crash. As for being a “good” Jew – while I only know you from your post – its already clear to me that Marc was a Man that you could aspire to be.

    Sincerely,

    Gil

If he died due to cardiac arrest, there is no reason to blame it on his motorcycle. A person could have a heart attack while driving a car too. (Dr. Roseff is not chiroprator to almost everybody in Lakewood. There are several other excellent chiropractors in Lakewood that many people go to. It is a big tragedy though because they’re not married that long and they have a young daughter.)

    Heshy,

How can you write this 1 week before R”H?!?! You call the niftar a shoita?!?! What about Mark Davidman Z”L – the legendary Hatzoloh member, who was R”L killed in an accident while on his motorcycle – was he also a shoita?? Heshy, you need to do a serious cheshbon Hanefesh, and THINK before you hit that SUBMIT button!!

Marc was an extremely well-intentioned, people-loving individual who will be missed by all of us who socialized and rode with him. In addition to be skilled and trained, Marc was a very careful and considerate motorcycle rider.

    Avi,

Use your head, not your emotions for a minute-

If he indeed died because of a dangerous activity such as riding a motorcycle, then yes, he may very well be a shoita for engaging in such activities. Just because he nebach died, it doesn’t mean he made wise decisions retroactively.

If he died for some other reason, like cardiac arrest, then he wasn’t a shoita, it was merely his time to go, and he happened to be riding a motorcycle at the time.

Either way, motorcycle riding is definitely more dangerous than driving a car.

I am a 52 year old, not very religious Jew from a small town in Maryland. I joined Hillel’s Angels several months ago and have been riding Harley-Davidsons for 30 years. I only knew Marc for several months, and even took an advanced motorcycle training course with him this summer in Sea Girt. First of all, he was an excellent and skilled motorcyclist. Second, I found Marc to be a kind, caring, knowledeable person with a good sense of humor. There are not enough people like that in the world – regardless of religious affiliation. I cannot believe the judgement that people in this forum are passing on Marc. Shame on all of you. It is unconscionable. People make decisions and it’s their life – not yours. I agree with Gil Paul – those who would pass judgement on Marc’s choices can only aspire to be the Man that Marc was.

    Anon 912a,

Too bad the only thing you got out the post you quoted was about Dr Shari. Does it really make a diff who uses her? I see the post said ALMOST. It happens to be that I too have seen 99% of her patients are inzir mentshin. If you wish to use someone else, you may do so. To critize one point, a small point at that, makes you look quite small.

Even though I agree with Heshy, this is not the place for his comments. It sounds like the nifter was a very careful rider. But to most people out there- stop the careless behavior in your lives – this includes not buckling up everybody – adults & kids!

I am Marc’s sister-in-law, Shari’s sister. It is unfortunate that people have to comment on something they know so little about. Our families have gone through tragedy before, and are very learned about halachah. My sister was adamant at the hospital after seeing her husband that he not have an autopsy. So your ridiculous comments about it are unfounded. Furthermore, I was always taught that Hashem sees what you do and the mitzvah’s a person does. Those are the things that count!! So, whether Marc was ‘frum’ or not, is a non-issue. He was a good person, a good Jew, a great husband, a great father, a great brother (in-law), a great, great uncle, and loved by many people as seen by those who came to pay their respects at the funeral and during shiva.

PS To comment on my sister as a chiropractor, when this is about the passing of her husband, is utterly ridiculous. It must be a person with a very small mind and no heart, to make such a ridiculous comment.

I am Marc’s brother-in-law, married to Shari’s sister Rena. I have been in the family less than 5 years. During that time Marc touched my life in many ways. He was always there for my wife and her daughters. At Rena’s and my wedding he told me he considered me the brother he never had. He took my son, Saul, into the family as if he was his own. I have not met a more caring and giving person. Given that, I am appalled at some of the things I have read here. Things that were written by people who never had the honor to meet Marc or Shari. It amazes me that people that espouse themselves to be so religious can be so ignorant and hypocritical. Choices that Marc and Shari made in their lives were theirs to make. Who are you, Heshy, Joseph and some of the anonymous contributors, to pass judgement on them? This is a time of tragic loss for the family. Not a time to be judgemental. If you are “frum”, that is your choice and I can respect that. You need to respect other peoples’ choices. In fact if you took the time, you would find out that Marc and Shari are not much different from you. This is America, and I realize that people have the right to voice their opinions. However, there is a time and a place. A forum honoring the memory of someone is certainly not the place. Did anyone stop to think that the family would read what was written and how it would make them feel? Obviously not! This is a time to come together and be supportive of a family that has lived in your community for many years. In fact, probably longer than some of you. This is not the time to denigrate the memory of someone just because you think he may not believe exactly like you do. In fact, how could you know what he believed if you never met him. He was a great man who touched many, many lives as evidenced by the number of people paying their respect to his wife, daughters and family.

I only met Marc a couple times but he projected a positive image about himself, his family and his community in Lakewood. He was well known to be a safe driver, a charitable man and a compassionate man to EVERYONE, not to just the people in his neighborhood. These are traits that I do NOT associate with the Lakewood community as whole and before you jump down my throat about being a gentile and not living there you should know that I have worked hand in hand with the orthodox and Hasidim communities for the last seven years on a daily basis. People like Marc are the exception in Lakewood, not the norm. There was something to be learned from Marc and saying he was a fool only drives that point home. My condolences to his friends and his wonderful family.
