Police were called to the Am Shalom Jewish Synagogue on Huronia Road. Several areas on and around the synagogue had been vandalized with spray paint including the word ‘Nazi’.
Police say that Am Shalom’s security camera could help catch the culprits in Barrie. The video is showing what appears to be two suspects. The first suspect is described as male wearing a dark hoody, dark shorts and carrying a lightly colored backpack, the second suspect appears to be a female wearing light coloured shorts and light coloured hoody with the hood up.
“We thought that in the city of Barrie there wouldn’t be any of that. This is a peaceful city,” said Ahuva Knight, speaking for Am Shalom, which has an estimated 200 members.
Ahuva said there was some damage done to the synagogue’s front door at this time last year, but on a much smaller scale. “This is a lot more dramatic,” said Marshall Green, a founding member of Am Shalom, “So, I guess they are stepping it up again.”
The Jewish New Year begins Monday, and Green said Toronto synagogues have full-time security at the ready, in case there is trouble.
City police say that the investigation is on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact police at 725-7025, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
The [local] Police should think in more universal terms by adding the Area Code [to the phone number]. That would enhance their chances of catching the perp/s! Most people don’t know where Barrie, [Canada] is located. Let alone the Area Code!!!
