Thirty-two-year-old Akron police Officer Justin Winebrenner was off-duty and unarmed in November when he was shot to death after helping get an unruly customer out of a pub.

Officers from several departments showed up Thursday morning to support 5-year-old Charlee on her first day of school at Turkeyfoot Elementary in New Franklin. Charlee’s mother and grandparents walked her into the building.

The two cruisers that Winebrenner used on patrol were parked outside the school.

The girl smiled when she saw the officers lined up outside school for her.

Rob Winebrenner says his son’s fellow officers have promised to always be there for Charlee.
