Woodbury, NY – An off-duty New York City police officer is in critical condition following a crash on the New York State Thruway.

State police say it happened Sunday night in Woodbury between exits 15A and 16.
They say Officer Alexis Penate, of Highland Mills, N.Y., lost control of his Jeep after hitting the rear of another car.
Police say the Jeep overturned several times, ejecting Penate onto the roadway. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center with head trauma and internal injuries.
The driver and passenger of the other car were not injured.
Police are continuing to investigate.
