According to Nassau Police, a 911 call came in at 10:30 a.m. reporting the dog attack at a home on Holland Avenue in Elmont. When two Fifth Precinct officers entered the backyard, they observed a male pit bull attacking the young girl, police said.
A third officer walked through the house, opened the back door and the pit bull stopped its attack on the girl and charged toward that officer, who then fired several rounds, killing the dog, police said.
The child, was visiting the Elmont home at the time of the attack, was transported to Franklin Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition, but she died from her injuries at 1:42 p.m. Police are withholding the name of the girl pending notification of family.
The girl was playing in the backyard of the home with two other children at the time of the attack, ABC 7 reported. A mother of one of the children witnessed the attack, but she was unable to pull the dog off the girl, according to the report.
No criminal charges will be filed in relation to the dog attack, but the pit bull’s owner, 29-year-old Carlyle Arnold was arrested at the scene for violating an order of protection, police said.
