Monday night’s vote in the Town of Monroe involves the annexation of 164 acres into Kiryas Joel, which local officials approved in September.
Monroe Town Clerk Mary Ellen Beams said referendum passed by a vote of 40 to 12 in favor of expansion.
A state judge in White Plains last week rejected a request from opponents to put a hold on the annexation vote. But she granted an injunction that keeps the annexation from taking place while the legal challenge proceeds.
Leaders of the densely settled enclave of ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jews say the village of 22,000 is bursting at the seams. Opponents of the annexation fear increased congestion from more apartment buildings in the suburban area about 50 miles north of New York City.
ורוח הקודש אומרת כן ירבה וכן יפרוץ
40 by 20 votes?? Only 60 people voted?
There must be something wrong with this story
Would the opponents rather have the Chassidim move into their neighborhoods and turn their school district into East Ramapo? I am not saying there is anything wrong with what happened in East Ramapo, as that is democracy and our country was founded on “no taxation without representation” however I understand why the neighbors would not want that situation, and it seems that KJ found a better way, since they have their own school district they won’t be able to vote in the Monroe Woodbury district elections
The 12 against are lucky then don’t live near Skvere. They would have their homes burnt down in Divine [aka The Rebbe’s] wrath.
who voted?
why are Satmar constantly antaganizing the Goyim?
I wish someone would briefly explain this whole controversy. I just can’t follow what is going on.
