Boston – 16 Weapons Missing After US Army Reserve Center Break-in

Boston – A man broke into a central Massachusetts Army Reserve center and made off with 16 weapons, and officials said Monday they were still trying to determine how it happened.

Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus said in a statement that the break-in occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday at the Lincoln Army Reserve Center.

Firefighters and police responded to a call just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday from an employee reporting smoke and signs of a break-in.

The FBI says terrorism isn’t suspected.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker describes some of the weapons as high caliber, including what he said were at least a couple of rifles.

“I’m especially concerned about it — separate and apart from anything that has to do with terrorism — I’m just concerned by the fact that some really high caliber weapons were stolen from a military facility in the first place,” Baker told reporters Monday.

Baker said he wasn’t aware of any specific threats to the public and that local and state law enforcement officials were working with the FBI in the investigation.

Augustus said that as a precaution, the Worcester Police Department has stationed additional offices in several key locations throughout the community until further notice.

Descriptions of the missing weapons have been entered into the National Crime Information Center, an online database searchable by law enforcement database.
