William Bratton said Thursday that street homelessness had “exploded” during the past two years under Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh).

The Wall Street Journal reports (http://on.wsj.com/1X1oPeU ) he said the administration’s mistake “was not validating what everyone was seeing.”

There are currently about 58,000 people living in city shelters, up around 13 percent from two years ago. A few thousand more people are believed to be living on the streets.

De Blasio denied homeless was up this summer. But the numbers showed otherwise, and tabloid exposes made the issue politically sensitive.

Administration officials note homelessness started spiking in 2014. They have pledged reforms.
