Almost all of those receiving commuted sentences are non-violent drug offenders. Many were convicted of distributing or possessing cocaine or crack-cocaine. The commutations are the most that Obama has issued at once time.

Obama is also pardoning an Ohio man sentenced to probation in a counterfeiting case and a Virginia woman sentenced to home detention and supervised release in a bank fraud case.

The commutations aim to build momentum for Obama’s broader push on criminal justice reform. Obama has sought to alleviate overcrowding in U.S. prisons by easing steep punishments for non-violent offenders. The White House has been working with lawmakers from both parties in an effort to overhaul U.S. sentencing.

To #3 and #4 -The restrictions which the Justice Dept. have placed on Jonathan Pollard, which are even more restrictive than the restrictiction given to that murderer Oscar Pistorious. Even Pollard’s parole officer stated that in the thousands of parolees, whom he’s supervised, he never saw a case such as Pollard’s, where electronic monitoring was required. He stated that it was only required in the case of organized mobsters, or violent offenders. Such restrictions never would have been implemented, if Obama would not have been given the green light. Even the U.S. District Judge, who is reviewing Pollard’s restrictions, stated last week that the U.S. Justice Dept. has failed to definitively show why Pollard is being restricted in such a manner (i.e. excessive hours of house arrest, continuous electronic monitoring, restrictions on leaving the Borough of Manhattan, etc.). Yet, Obama is content to commute the sentences of drug dealers who have supplied poison to hundreds of people, and ruined the lives of thousands! Why is it that not one of the Presidential candidates, either on the Democratic or the Republican side, have not discussed this outrage?
