Koenig, a member of the Rockland Sheriff’s Computer Crime Task Force, has been named “2008 Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year” by the Secret Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami.

He was co-recipent with two special agents who worked with him on investigating a man who was trading child pornography on-line.

The man was from Flint, Mich., and Koenig used the man’s screen name to develop additional leads and information on a prolific child pornographer in Florida, according to a letter of commendation from John Lange, a deputy special agent for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Koenig also is assigned to the New York Field Office of Electronics Crime Task Force, which also presented him with a plaque of appreciation for his investigative work on pedophile and child pornographers.

Sheriff James Kralik was giddy with pride over the honors bestowed on Koenig, who joined the department in 1996 as the nation’s first Hasidic Jewish police officer. He remains a Kaser village trustee and deputy mayor of the Ramapo village.

Kralik said Koenig has attained national and potentially an international reputation for his work on the Internet involving people who prey on children.

Estimating Koenig has participated in 160 convictions, Kralik called Koenig a “world-class officer who has reached the top of his profession.”

“I am extremely proud of Sholom,” Kralik said. “He has become not only a national figure in computer crime case, especially in child porn and pedophila, he’s become international,” Kralik said. “His assistance has been requested by the Israel National Police on computer crimes.”

While I commend him for his work and accomplishments, I think that a frum Jew has no place in this kind of work. I’m assuming that it’s impossible to do such work without actually seeing these pictures, which even with the best intentions, is a no no for an ehrlicha Yid.

    To – Askipeh Hanidreses:

This article can easily evoke positive feeling from this person’s family, friends (and those who feel close by their religion). It, like anything, can be skewed to evoke criticism. Mish nisht in yenem’s gesheft. You have a problem with human tendencies? Make sure your profession sticks to papers with numbers and no people. If someone else does something (and seemingly very successfully) salute the positive. If you find it difficult to salute the positive of another, keep your perspective to yourself. Use your netiah to critcism (of course in the name of gd, halacha) to the mirror.

Doctors (esp Gynocologists) see things too. Haztolo workers do “negiah”. Ever heard the term Chosid Shoteh? Ehrlich doesn’t have to mean that you beg a mugger to shoot you because “it must be hashem’s will”

Perhaps Hikind (or any Jew) should not involve themsleves with pedophile matters either? The thing one will hear are not for ehrlich ears. Leave dirty laundry for “others”. Such an attitude breeds the abiliy for so much to get swept undfer the rug – becuase its not for an ehrlich Jew to see/hear.

I found the picture cool. Payos and a badge.

““I am extremely proud of Sholom,”

    Should be Shlomo.

In English, Shlomo is osiyos Sholom (same letters), so easy to confuse I guess.

Nice story, congratulations, nice to see such positive news.

“just a thought – if such a case were brought before the sanhedrin (may we be zoche to see them again in the lishkas hagazis b’mihaira b’yameinu) do you think they would view the evidence?”

If a Tanna sat in the mikva to tell women how to toivel, then obviously yes.

Maybe this kind of work, revolting as it must be, can be his “specialty”: weeding out these sickos amongst “frum” Yidden & making sure they are prosecuted.

I am certain that as Reb Sholom is both a Chassid & a law enforcement officer he does what is right, no matter who the pervert is. But I can’t help but wonder how & if he could use his expertise to catch “frum” sickos.
