Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the grant on Wednesday. The money will go to 57 counties plus New York City.

Albany County will get the largest single amount, a grant of more than $233,000. New York City will receive $214,000.

The funds are intended to go to technology upgrades and can also be used to cover day-to-day expenses incurred at 911 dispatch centers, which are typically run by counties.

Cuomo, a Democrat, says every second counts in an emergency and that the grants will ensure dispatchers have the technology and support they need to improve emergency response.
