U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara (buh-RAH’-ruh) traveled to Albany on Monday to address a meeting of the state Conference of Mayors and speak on a public radio program sponsored by good-government groups.
He also joined Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) and other leaders for the swearing in of the state’s new chief judge.
Bharara is U.S. attorney for New York’s Southern District. Last year, his office successfully prosecuted Democratic ex-Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Republican ex-Senate Leader Dean Skelos (SKEH’-lohs) on corruption charges. Silver and Skelos had denied the accusations.
Bharara’s office also investigated Cuomo’s handling of an anti-corruption commission but found insufficient evidence of a crime.
