In a statement, D’Amico said he was leaving to pursue other opportunities, which were not immediately listed.
“I have been fortunate to serve the public in law enforcement for the past 35 years, both for New York City and the State, and it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to lead the men and women of the State Police,” he said.
D’Amico became the leader of the State Police in 2011 after being nominated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Previously D’Amico had worked as chief investigator in the office of the New York state Attorney General and spent 27 years in the New York City Police Department.
It will be up to Cuomo to pick D’Amico’s replacement. State police said a search is commencing to find D’Amico’s replacement.
“There is no doubt he has led the State Police to a higher level,” Gov. Cuomo said, in a statement. “I am going to miss him both professionally and personally and I thank him for the kindness he has shown to me, as well as to the people of the State of New York.”
