REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun Jerusalem – Hiddush religious pluralism organization called on Education Minister Naftali Bennett to ensure that state-funded haredi schools do not hold classes on Independence Day, a national holiday when all other Jewish schools are closed.

“The continued funding of educational institutions that educate in a negative manner about the state is an act of suicide by the state,” said Hiddush director and attorney Rabbi Uri Regev.

Hiddush stated that the approximately 50,000 haredi pupils from so-called “exempt” haredi schools attend a full school day on Independence Day, despite the law establishing it as a national holiday.

“Exempt” schools receive at least 55% funding of fully-funded state schools.

How about the Israeli Government forces all businesses to close and all transportation to stop on Shabbos and Yom Tov?

Agreed they should close. Also force every school to teach Torah, Neviim, Ketuvim, Mishnah, Gemara and Halacha.

2,3 and 4 are seriously missing the point. If you can’t acknowledge or respect the state, don’t take money from them. It’s extremely hypocritical and actually rude.

“Force”? Did I read correctly? Hiddush is now pushing for “K’fee’ya Daatit”? I thought that ramming your own religious beliefs down someone else’s throat is “Public Enemy #1 ”. Is Hiddush the new Jewish Taliban? They are so primitive!

Yom Ha’atzma’ot is important, but learning Torah is more important. We don’t interrupt Torah for Yom Ha’atzma’ot, however there is no reason that after cheder that a family can’t make a barbeque and watch the fire works.

All the defenders of the idolaters seem to be missing something very simple.
What if the Zionists insisted that they open on Shabbos or else they would forfeit their funding? Would you agree that this is reasonable? Presumably not.

Yet you have no problem with the Zionists forcibly being mevatel Torah of tinokos shel beis rabban who do not interrupt their learning even for binyan beis haMikdash? Sounds like Zionist (which is, of course, by definition), not Torah, values.

The reality is simply that Yom Ha’atzma’ut is a political holiday, with no religious significance. For comparison, who would seriously assign religious significance to July 4th? Religious institutions that otherwise close only for religious holidays are merely being consistent with their overall policies. To see it any other way is just not being honest, and would be forcing a political opinion onto others.

No huffing and puffing or heavy emotions necessary. Relax and enjoy.
