Marion Wiesel said in a statement Saturday that her husband was a fighter who waged countless battles for innocent victims.

She says he fought for the memory of six million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust and to protect innocent victims without regard for their ethnicity.

But she says he was truly passionate about teaching college students.

His death was announced Saturday by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. No other details were immediately available. Wiesel was 87.
