Detective Cpl. Bryan Shaw of the El Centro College police force told The Associated Press Tuesday that Obama was “thankful for everything that we did.”

A bullet grazed Shaw’s abdomen, but he continued facing down the gunman. Shaw’s colleague, Officer John Abbott, also continued working even after shards of glass went into both of his legs.

Obama spoke Tuesday in Dallas at a memorial service for the five police officers slain in Thursday’s attack. Shaw and Abbott both attended the service and later were among those who met with the president.

Abbott said the service was “very well done.” He said, “It was good to see people coming together as much as they were.”
