Miami Beach, FL – A vote to limit liquor sales on Ocean Drive was postponed amid a contentious debate about South Beach’s entertainment district.

Mayor Philip Levine has said bars and “lawless disruption” compromise the security and image of the oceanfront strip known for its neon lights, Art Deco architecture and nightlife.
He also said residents and some visitors avoid the area. According to The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/29FZja1 ), Mango’s Tropical Cafe owner David Wallack called those claims “nonsense.”
Levine proposed limiting liquor sales after 2 a.m. along most of Ocean Drive.
The Herald reports that at a meeting Wednesday, city commissioners postponed voting on Levine’s ordinance and instead discussed crime and other South Beach problems. Some commissioners wanted to consider enforcing a noise ordinance and open-container ban, increasing police patrols and reducing the number of umbrellas covering sidewalk dining.
