ReutersWashington – TDeparting Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid lashed out at Donald Trump on Friday as “a sexual predator who lost the popular vote and fueled his campaign with bigotry and hate.”

The Nevada Democrat said in a statement that “If Trump wants to roll back the tide of hate he unleashed, he has a tremendous amount of work to do and he must begin immediately.”

Reid said white nationalists, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Islamic State extremist group are celebrating Trump’s election, “while innocent, law-abiding Americans are wracked with fear.” That “does not feel like America,” Reid said.

Absent from the statement was any note of conciliation or a congratulatory olive branch.

The 76-year-old Reid is retiring at the end of this year after five terms, so unlike other congressional Democrats he has no imperative to try to make nice with Trump. That position allows him to give voice to bolder sentiments than other Democratic leaders who may need to try to work with Trump.

Reid’s replacement, New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, has had little to say about Trump so far, but he did congratulate him in a phone call and a brief statement. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also offered congratulations and the prospect of working together on an infrastructure and jobs bill.

For Democratic leaders who have spent months campaigning for Democrat Hillary Clinton and against Trump, his election now presents a challenge on several levels, including whether or how to try to reach out to him. Reid doesn’t have to deal with such considerations and instead on Friday aimed harsh parting shots at Trump, whom he’d spent months denouncing on the Senate floor.

“Winning the electoral college does not absolve Trump of the grave sins he committed against millions of Americans,” Reid said. “Donald Trump may not possess the capacity to assuage those fears, but he owes it to this nation to try.”

Trump never siad a word against gays or african americans. For starters that’s baloney.

Secondly, you liberals missed the boat. Trump won because the government is broken. Trump is a disruptor and willing to challenge the status quo. Enough of his liberal pcy stuff.

“Bigotry and hate” — yes, I think that is what we are seeing in the streets across the country right now from all of the “inclusive” democrats who forgot that we live in a democracy. Let freedom reign!

They keep on bringing up gays and African Americans. Such utter nonsense. Trump is pro gay rights and he’s been one of the few to make fixing the inner cities a major part of their campaign. The media and the liberal politicians need to paint a picture of him a KKK monster so it fits in with their narative. Complete fabrication.
Hey Harry, go run on a treadmill!

Reid is right about FEAR. Put yourself in the shoes of a democrat, listening to all the rants and of Trump. It is not like – now we have a RIGHT leaning ruling party, notice when Raegan or Bush won no one hit the streets. What they are scared of is a “egotistic demagogue” in the White house. I agree with most of the things Donald stands for, but I am not happy with the man. To be honest I am also concerned….calling all his opponents names, little Marco, stupid, low energy etc. even if you agree with his agenda, do you want such a person in position of the most powerful man in the world?? I personally am not worried about the rhetoric and name calling (it will only make an amusing and interesting 4 years) but I am WORRIED ABOUT HIS EGO!!
All his life he had everyone suck up to him, I am concerned he will not be able put his ego aside.(as we keep seeing) A leader has to do what is best for the county, however, if his ego gets in the way he will then do thing to feed the ego.
EGO is a powerful thing, it destroyed friendships and relationship. His EGO can end up throwing Israel under the bus. His ego is stronger then Jared and Ivanka

“innocent, law-abiding Americans are wracked with fear”
In other words, the half of the country that voted for Trump is wracked w/ fear over him? Or we’re all white nationalists, Putins and ISISs?
Sounds like he’s resurrecting the “deplorables” label that even Hillary realized was a mistake the moment she said it.
