Schumer on Sunday released a letter he wrote to the NTSB. He cited a Feb. 19 crash of a single-engine plane that took off from Long Island and crashed into a neighborhood in Bayonne, New Jersey, as well as a Feb. 26 crash of a plane being used for practice at another Long Island airport. Two people were killed in that crash.

The New York Democrat wants the agency to look into why the small plane crashes are happening and possible additional safety measures. The NTSB said it would review the letter once it’s been received.

Unfortunately, the owners and operators of small private planes have a powerful ally, which lobbies Congress. It is known as the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Because of the latter lobbying group, incompetent pilots, with various issues are allowed to pilot small aircraft. In many of these small cases, pilot error has contributed to these fatal crashes. Small planes are very unforgiving to the occupants in the event of a crash. Unlike automobiles, whereby most crashes are survivable, with a small aircraft, the body is similar to “tissue paper”; that is, the plane is made of very light weight material, and it pancakes, crushing the occupants. Many times, pilots of small aircraft take chances and fly in weather that they should not be flying in, don’t fill up with enough fuel, do not always maintain their engines as they should, don’t maintain enough altitude, drink while flying, and fly into unfamiliar terrain.
