The robbery took place somewhere between 12 and 1 PM on March 2nd at Chasuna Plaza on Rutledge Street in Williamsburg, a store that sells a variety of wedding related items including jewelry, furniture, linens and silver.

The owner of Chasuna Plaza, who agreed to be interviewed only on condition of anonymity, said that the couple came into the store and told sales people that they were looking for furniture. The couple, who appeared to be in their sixties and were dressed as Orthodox Jews, wandered through the store and left without purchasing anything.

After the theft was noticed, a salesgirl recalled that their behavior had been somewhat suspicious.

“They kept looking over towards the jewelry section but every time the salesgirl looked towards them they made it seem like they were interested in the seforim shranks,” said the owner. “Then the salesgirl got busy with a kallah and that was when they went to the jewelry department.”

Surveillance video shows the man standing nearby as the woman bent over a display case whose glass had been recently replaced and was not yet glued down. The woman can be seen holding the raised glass pane and putting her hand inside the case before the couple walked away from the jewelry area.

According to the store’s owner, the case appeared no different visually than any other case in the store and that an observer would not have been able to tell that the glass was not secured to the rest of the display.

Several hours later a salesgirl noticed that four diamond pins were no longer in the display case and asked her boss if he had sold the missing items.

“We looked through the camera and saw at 12 o’clock they were in the case and at 1 o’clock they were not,” reported the owner. “I watched the video from there and saw it happen.”

Police said that the man involved had white hair, and was wearing a yarmulka, a black jacket, blue pants and black shoes. The woman who removed the items from the case was wearing a black hat, pants, jackets and pocketbook and was wearing glasses.
