New York, NY – Uncle Sam Gives New Yorkers One Extra Day To File Taxes

New York, NY – Uncle Sam is giving New Yorkers an extra day to pay their taxes, thanks to a Massachusetts state holiday that will close a federal processing center in Andover on April 17.
Five other eastern states and the District of Columbia also will have until midnight on Tuesday, April 18, to postmark their filings.

All Americans have a couple of extra days to file this year, as the traditional Tax Day, April 15, falls on a Saturday.
But the additional day for many residents in the Northeast comes because of Patriot’s Day, a holiday in Massachusetts and Maine.
“It gives the procrastinators one more day,” a spokesman for the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance, Thomas Bergin, said.

New Yorkers will also have an additional day to file their state taxes to Albany, Mr. Bergin said, because the state follows the IRS in setting an annual deadline.

New Yorkers are likely to take advantage of the added time: While the state has already received more than 4 million out of the 9 million expected tax filings, more than half of all state residents wait until the last two weeks to file their returns.
