Washington Township, NJ – Congregation B’nai Tikvah wants to more than double the size of its synagogue at Fish Pond Road and Spring Lake Avenue. It now took another step toward that goal when the township planning board granted preliminary approval.

The synagogue — the only one in the township — would expand from 3,710 square feet to 11,370 square feet. The addition would house a combination sanctuary and social hall and free up space for Hebrew school classrooms, offices and two kosher kitchens. For the first time in the congregation’s 34-year history, members would be able to celebrate bar mitzvahs and wedding parties at the synagogue.

The $750,000 to $1 million addition is envisioned as a simple, clean building with a hipped roof, said the architect. There would be a connector that creates a new arched entranceway, and the new sanctuary would feature “gently curved” walls to let in natural light. The exterior would include both stone and stucco finishes.
