Firefighters first got the call around 4:30 a.m. and are currently on the scene on 49th Street near 12th Avenue in Borough Park.
The FDNY said the fire engulfed the second, third and fourth floor of the four-story building. Flames were being dosed for more than an hour before crews declared the blaze under control.
At least 14 people are hurt, one of whom is in critical condition, according to Deputy Chief Peter Leicht. A woman was trapped inside a bedroom, where firefighters got to her and pulled her to safety, he said.
“There were gates on the windows, so there was no way she could get out,” said Leicht. “We had a firefighter on the roof, he heard her call. The firefighter on the roof called our inside team, the inside team was dispatched to go into the rear bedroom.”
The woman was unconscious and was hospitalized in serious condition.
Nine civilians are in stable condition and were able to escape to the roof, where firefighters got them down. Leicht said some children suffered injuries.
Officials warned of traffic delays in the area and told people who live nearby to close their windows because of the smokey conditions the fire created.
Leicht said the fire started in a second-floor kitchen and quickly spread up to the third and fourth floors.
Fake nus.
The REAL story is that the sukkas blocked the firefighters response.
Why can’t the lazy media tell the whole story?
Kudos to the brave men and women of FDNY. Never doubt their commitment to the safety and rescue of all New Yorkers.
Why can’t they use legal gates like the rest of us? They have to use gates that look fancy!! In life and death you do not need fancy!! You just need to get out!!
To #4 You can use legal bars and be just as safe! At least you can escape in case of fire. Like this, you are a prisoner!!
