New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the start of construction on Wednesday. The project involves redesigned roadways, a new Route 32 bridge and underpass, improved pedestrian access, better public transportation facilities and park-and-ride areas for commuters.
Cuomo’s office says the new plan for the area should reduce congestion by more than 50 percent in and around the popular Woodbury Premium Outlets.
The state’s Thruway Authority also plans to install new cashless toll booths for the northbound lanes at the nearby Harriman toll, a change that officials hope will cut down on traffic backups.
The work is expected to be completed in two years.
“For too long, Hudson Valley residents have endured endless traffic headaches caused by the interchange at Woodbury Common, and now the state is taking action by developing a world-class transportation hub that will help alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow for residents and tourists alike,” Governor Cuomo said.
“Across New York, we are making unprecedented investments in transportation infrastructure that will move our local economies forward, and this accelerated project will transform the region for years to come.”
