New York - #MeToo 'Silence Breakers' Named Time Magazine's Person Of The Year

New York - “The Silence Breakers” — those who have shared their stories about assault and harassment — have been named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

Numerous women have spoken out since October about sexual misconduct by dozens of high-profile men in entertainment, media, business and sports. Time praised those who have given “voice to open secrets, for moving whisper networks onto social networks, for pushing us all to stop accepting the unacceptable.” The magazine’s cover features women who say they have been harassed.

Time’s announcement was made Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show, where longtime host Matt Lauer was fired last week amid harassment allegations. “Today” host Savannah Guthrie acknowledged Wednesday that this year’s winner hits “close to home” and mentioned Lauer by name.

Women who spoke out, initially against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and then others, helped to spawn the #MeToo movement, with millions of people telling stories of sexual misconduct on social media.

The tweets, Instagram and Facebook posts began after actress-activist Alyssa Milano followed on a suggestion from a friend of a friend on Facebook and tweeted: “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.” The hashtag was tweeted nearly a million times in 48 hours. #MeToo was actually founded by activist Tarana Burke a decade ago to raise awareness about sexual violence. Milano has said she wasn’t aware of Burke’s contributions when she made her initial tweet and has since publicly credited her.

Milano and Burke appeared together Wednesday on the “Today” show.

“This is just the start. I’ve been saying from the beginning it’s not just a moment, it’s a movement,” Burke said. “Now the work really begins.”

“As women, we have to support each other and stand together and say, ‘That’s it. We’re done. No more,’” Milano said. “It’s vital to me that we really set in some actionable things that we can do to continue this momentum.”

The two runners-up were Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, himself accused of sexual misconduct by numerous women. He has denied any wrongdoing. Trump, Person of the Year in 2016, had tweeted recently that the magazine had told him he “probably” would be honored again if he agreed to an interview and photo shoot. Trump added that he “took a pass.” Time has disputed his account.

The dem-o-rat party are a bunch of radical leftist who are anti american, anti religion, anti Israel.
The left in this county is a very dangerous destructive force.
And most of the people who being accused are liberal/leftist/dems!

The particular "frum" Yidden you are talking about possess a amoral/morality, in which calls on "moral" issues are dependent on whether the alleged scoundrel is among their favored Republicans. They curl up their faces in disgust at Bill Clinton...but skip not a beat giving Trump a free pass. Inconsistent and hypocritical.

The judgements they make are not based in Torah...rather, they are the judgements of relatively uneducated, ultra-conservative intolerant Americans...who coincidentally just happen to wear yarmulkes.

There is a correlation with religion: religious people tend to think that all sins are equal, so predatory behavior is no worse in their eyes than any premarital/extramarital relations.

Most frum jews do not support Moore who is a pedophile.

As far as Trump is concerned, this is the society we live in. Its with Hockenbery, Weinstien Clinton and even the senator conyers who championed for civil rights and yes trump. We can't base our votes on that.

As a side note, I have less piety for women in the porn industry whose job it is, is to flirt and dangle candy in front of men all day vs Moore who went out and exploited stangers not in porn

"...religious people tend to think that all sins are equal..."

I have no idea what other religions have to say, but clearly you are not an observant Jew, as your comment is materially and fundamentally incorrect in the context of Judaism. The Torah does not equate consensual relations with predatory behavior...and neither do today's frum Jews.

Don't measure Yiddishkeit by the comments of some of the more extreme people here...see my #4, above, where I say that some comments on VIN are accurate reflections of even elementary Torah, "...rather, they are the judgements of relatively uneducated, ultra-conservative intolerant Americans...who coincidentally just happen to wear yarmulkes."

See now the misleading harm that can result from intemperate comments like yours, Archy, TWH...and the rest of you intolerants.

Wrong and so sad that you engage in demagoguery and labeling others.

Our logic is simple. We don't like Clinton or Trump's behavior and find them equally disturbing. However its normal behavior unfortunately. Thus the issue of ones personal moralty cannot play a role or perhaps its plays a very small role at best. So now we are left with deciding who is better for the country, Israel and frum Jewry.

I don't mean that it is accurate, it's the bible thumpers I'm talking about, and there are those in every religion. People who use their religion without actually studying it.

Actually the torah is pretty lenient upon an אונס of a virgin / unmarried girl. They charge a fine of 50 shekel and in fact command the rapist to marry the girl.

Parshas Ki setza perek 22 possuk 29.

I am not sure what to make of this torah commandment. It's quite astonishing. And I don't have all the answers but imagine such a law on the books nowadays where you py $50 and are commanded to marry the girl.

Ignoramus, it was a democratic president who recognized Israel ,Harry S. Truman and it was a republican banker who bailed out Hitler named Forrestal. Typical right wing ignorance. Hitler was broke and his financial wizard Hjalmar Schacht secured an American loan and ultimately 6 million Jews were muirdered. You are not included in Jews because being a rat you are a rodent

History has nothing to do with current events. It used to be that the democrates cared more about Israel than republicans. And in general democartes cared more about us jews and our concerns.

Nowadays things changed. The republican anti semties of yesteryear including NIxon and Baker are gone. The old democrates who cared about Israel like Chucky are either gone or near retirement. The young demarcates are strong Bernie boycott Israel supporters. Booker and Glibrand are not as pro Israel as chucky. And the young republicans and the Bannon movement are very pro Israel, pro protecting jewish religious rights and pro school vouchers or at least tuition deductions (like in the current senate tax bill enabling us to use 529k)

So very different times.

Darn straight you're "...not sure what to make of this..."

Show your post to your Rabbi, and ask him contextually it's even remotely appropriate or relevant.

I remind you that the Klal today is undertaking ever more aggressive initiatives to prevent and to address predatory behavior.

Stick to whatever it is that you really know something about in depth...whatever it is.

For the umpteenth time, Archy, would you look up the definition of the word demagogue, and stop using it so incorrectly.

No, wait a minute...I know you abhor having to research anything about which you pontificate...so I'll once again give you the Merriam Webster dictionary definition:

"...a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises, using arguments based on emotion rather than reason, in order to gain power." (hmmm...sounds like your Great Leader)

Hey I agree that we must address and prevent the sick predatory behavior in our environment. I am on your side.

However, when you bring up the torah its not always the most logical proof. And this is one of those shvera halachos that I can't fully comprehend. Like why doesn't a rapsit get a harsher punishment? The torah is more stringent on a consensual post marriage affair vs a rapist who gets a slap on the wrist.

I am still firm in my jewish beliefs and don't pretend to understand the inner workings of the torah. But those are the facts

Being forced to marry the girl is a huge deal. It means that in exchange for defiling her, he must not only pay a fine to her father, but he also has to provide for her for the rest of their lives. In addition, just like in any other civil injury suit, he must pay full damages.

...it is too strong, and I apologize; it was unforgivable poetic excess.

But, as "bozo" has a meaningful definition, you're objection to it on "intellectual' grounds is misplaced:

"bozo
bo*zo
noun, North American, informal
a stupid, rude or insignificant person, especially a man"

Re what happens to a rapist. In addition to paying the 50 he ALSO needs to pay 5 types of compensation- for damages, for the emabarrasment, for the pain, medicals bills (ie for a therapist), and for the time missed from work. This is similar to being sued today and not a paltry sum.

In addition to marrying her (and she can choose not to marry him) he is never allowed to divorce her and is required to provide her with food, clothes shelter like any other wife for the rest of her life. Rememeber that for many centuries women who were not besulahs were considered second class when it came time to get married and if they didnt get married, it was hard for them to fend for themselves. The Torah made sure she would have the option. So he doesnt get off so easy.

So is that a harsher punishment than having an affair with a married women when one gets the death penalty?

OK, these men accused are pigs. However, what about the women? Are they all victims? In Jewish law, a man is not allowed to seclude himself with a woman (called 'yichud'). So what were these women thinking when they agreed to come up to the man's hotel room and have a vodka? Don't they know that hormones run thru a man at a time like this with vigor? And they agreed to meet a man this way, and expect the man to behave like they were a piece of furniture. And the way women dress nowadays, that shouldn't be a factor? Gimme a break !

It's a mercy on the woman. A married woman doesn't suffer if the rapist is killed. She has her husband to provide for her. A single girl must keep him alive to support her.
