The House approved the bill Wednesday, 231-198.

The bill is a top priority of the National Rifle Association, which calls it an important step to allow gun owners to travel freely between states without worrying about conflicting state laws or civil suits.

Opponents, mostly Democrats, say the bill could endanger public safety by overriding state laws that place strict limits on guns.

Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Esty of Connecticut called it “unspeakable” that Congress would expand gun owners’ rights after the recent shootings and other deadly attacks.

Arch, there is no way on Earth that the Second Amendment would be overturned or even modified. It would take 2/3 of both Houses of Congress and approval of 3/4 of state legislations to effect such an action. There is as much chance of that happening as overturning the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments, oh,wait a minute, Congress and various State Legislations are working on that, never mind.

The concept that carry permits should be should have reciprocity the same as driver’s licenses is logical (N.B. the Constitution does NOT guarantee the right to own and operate a motor vehicle). The problem is making the requirements for obtaining such a licence uniform among all the States. In Florida and Nevada, two States in which I have carry permits, the State requires that applicants undergo:
    1. A complete FBI background check (under CODIS).
    2. A mandatory 8 hour course, with written test upon completion, in firearm safety and the laws governing carriage of firearms and the use of deadly force.
    3. Qualification with the weapon/s to be carried demonstrating safe and proper handling.
This seems like a reasonable standard.
