Lewis made the announcement Thursday. The Georgia Democrat and civil rights icon helped organize the 1964 Freedom Summer targeting segregation in Mississippi.
The Saturday ceremony marks Mississippi’s bicentennial of admission into the union. But what was intended as a moment of racial unity and atonement in the state with the largest share of African-Americans is descending into racial and partisan strife after Republican Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant invited fellow Republican Trump to attend.
The NAACP has said Trump should cancel his planned appearance because of his divisive record on civil rights issues.
Several prominent Mississippi Democrats say they won’t attend. Some plan protests.
good riddance
typical divisive Democrats. The president is someone busy and he is taking time to show that the past racism is now gone with the proof that a black man with a Muslim name was president in the US for 8 years.
Seems to be hatred.
Funny thing is that out of all Trump’s comments and tweets he actually never siad a word against african americans. Yes he did say stuff against Latino’s (of which I disagree) and he did say stuff against muslims (of which I agree with). They point to minor stuff like the style in which he labeled AA people or his employment record in the 80’s.. Nothing substantive at all.
How immature and racist – of Congressman Lewis and his cronies.
This is why people don’t take liberal congressmen seriously. When will they realize that everything doesn’t revolve around them?
Let this schvartser stay home, with the rest of his friends.
I am eager to hear the President to give a great speech on the subject of civil rights.
