Washington – State Department: Jerusalem Is Israel’s Capital, But Not In Passports Yet

    12

Washington – After United States President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel last week, US consular services planned no change to their protocol listing Jerusalem as unaffiliated with any country in American passports.

A State Department official told reporters on Friday that while the US recognizes the Israeli capital, the decision would not spell any changes to consular practices or visa issuances, and does not necessarily mean that Jerusalem is seen as within the Jewish state.

A 2015 Supreme Court case ruled against Jerusalem-born Americans petitioning to list Israel in their passports, claiming that only the president– not Congress– had the power to make such a recognition, and noting that consecutive presidents had chosen not to do so.

“Recognition is a matter on which the nation must speak with one voice. That voice is the president’s,” wrote the court’s majority. Theoretically, Trump’s decision reopens consideration of that court case.

The administration is also debating how to delineate Jerusalem in US-issued maps going forward.

Don’t get it. The president recognized the capital, they should put on passports.

Gosh almost as if the President said he was doing something without doing it. He did however manage to sign another six-month waiver to not move the embassy.

Yawn…once again, Trump’s announcement was an incendiary PR job…succeeding in screwing up international relations…and in getting you ill informed populists all worked up in a frenzy of appreciation…but really doing nothing.

If they wanted to move the US embassy all they have to do is take the plaque from Tel Aviv building and move it to the consulate or rent rooms in an office building in Jerusalem and Voila! the Embassy is moved, and one doesn’t have to spend millions to build anything, and it can even be done before or during Chanukah, that would be a real gift. (old embassy building could be used as a US storage space)
