Fishman (C) speaks to the media next to U.S. Secret Service Special Agent James Mottola (L) and assistant New Jersey Attorney Gurbir Grewal during a news conference in Newark, New Jersey, July 25, 2013. ReutersTrenton, NJ – New Jersey governor-elect Phil Murphy made history on Tuesday, nominating Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal as his choice for the Garden State’s next attorney general. Grewal, the son of immigrants, left private practice over a decade ago hoping to be able to give back to the country he called home, reported NJ.com (http://bit.ly/2z8thRW).  Standing next to Murphy at a Tuesday press conference in Trenton, Grewal said that he hoped to show that those who may look and pray differently can still be committed to the United States.

Discrimination was another motivating factor for Grewal.

“As someone who has experienced hate and intolerance throughout my life, I want to work to ensure that we all live in a fair and just society,” said Grewal.

Grewal made headlines in July as the first public official to oppose the Mahwah parks ban that was intended to keep Orthodox Jews out of the township’s recreational areas, ordering Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli to ignore the ordinance.  According to NorthJersey.com (https://njersy.co/2z9ChGq) Grewal said that the practice could lead to racial profiling and other unlawful activities in addition to illegally targeting out of state Orthodox Jews.

Grewal’s actions led to an investigation by New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino which ultimately sued Mahwah to block the ordinances and asked for the return in $3.4 million in state grants that were used to construct the public parks as previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2z9jZVZ).

Grewal is Murphy’s first cabinet level pick, reported CBS News (http://cbsloc.al/2z8QSlA).  Murphy, a Democratic, had vowed to create a diverse administration.

Grewal said that he hopes to create a stronger and safer New Jersey,  and his nomination was endorsed by Governor Chris Christie.

“His tenure, almost without exception, has been exemplary,” said Christie “I am confident he has the skills necessary to be an attorney general that we can be proud of in New Jersey.”

If he is a Sikh he is not Moslem any more than Trump is. It is truly an embarrassment to have to state this. I assume that this is good for most people and bad for criminals.

I work in an office where I would know. Nobody who has worked with Grewal as anything but very strong praise for the man, and we welcome him.
