The fire broke out in the home on East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay at around 2:20 a.m.
Commissioner Daniel Nigro (NY’-groh) says the cause of Monday’s fire is still under investigation by fire marshals. But he also said in a statement that holiday traditions that “we all hold dear” — such as candles, overloaded outlets and power strips — can cause tragedies.
An oil fed menorah is being looked at as a possible cause of the fire. It was on the first floor, where the blaze is believed to have started.
The fire claimed the lives of 39-year-old Aliza Azan; 11-year-old Moshe; 7-year-old Yitzah and 3-year-old Henrietta.
Nigro said the father, 45-year-old Joseph Azan acted very courageously, and got 2 teenagers out safely, tried to go back in to save the rest.
He also said that The FDNY have reason to believe a smoke alarm was activated and may have played a role in alerting two of the boys to the fact that there was a fire, but said they haven’t found the detector yet.
The father and 2 teenagers remain in critical condition. Five firefighters were also injured.
“As a parent, it’s impossible for me to imagine what this family is going through right now,” said Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio. “During the holiday season, we all need to be cautious with decorations, electric lights, candles, space heaters and other items.”
The funerals are scheduled to take place this evening at Cong Sheves Achim.
Of course this goy doesn’t understand that when Gd wants an event to occur, it will happen no matter what precautions are taken.
